Very Informative
This is another excellent documentary from Ric Burns. The combination of useful information, excellent narration from Russell Baker, and a compelling soundtrack enable it to rise above most documentaries.

Bias is obvious
Rather dim view of our history but expected as much from PBS. Otherwise well worth a viewing if you already know history , if you don't ,I'm afraid, this series will sour you on our great nation.

The Way West: How The West was Won and Lost.
As with his other productions, this two disc DVD programme by Ric Burns is a classic. The description of the contents on the packet cover states:- "Between 1845 and 1893, the American West was lost and won - wound with ribbons of iron and wire and brought within the dominion of the United States - while, along the way, the lives of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans were violently disrupted and all but destroyed. This mesmerizing six hour documentary series from acclaimed filmaker Ric Burns chronicles the final astonishing decades of the American frontier from the time of the Gold Rush until after the last gasp of the Indian wars at Wounded Knee." This summarizes the contents of this documentary perfectly, which is why I have quoted it.To my mind, the best characteristic of Ric Burn's productions are their genuine impartiality. The viewer is presented the historical facts in an entertaining and enlightening way; and no attempt is made to grind any particular intellectual axe, or push any particular opinion. That said, all to often we all overlook the obvious, and the West was lost as well as won, and this programme does a very good job of illustrating just how this happened, far better than several others on the same topic released recently.I have no hesitation in recommending this series to any who wish to better understand how the ancestoral hunting grounds occupied by the Sioux, Cheyenne, Apache and other now legendary tribes for so many thousands of years; became the United States of America in such a very short, but irrevocably world changing era.
