Choose the right one and its great!
Are two of these and the one with this cover is the one to get (check out samples).I really wanted the paperback of this but now I'm super excited I decided to get the kindle so I can look up stuff on the go. Being able to search the book for topics is totally time saving and let's me find more then what often would just using the table of contents.

Poor print quality
It is the book edition I take issue, not the book itself. The pictures are small, black and white, and of poor quality. Quite fuzzy pictures--imagine out of a newspaper advertisement. While I love the author's style and approach, I am returning because this does no good at this price point. Pictures...if used as illustration to explain material, must be of sufficient quality so as to explain. In this case, the pictures just make the book a bigger. They are useless to the learning for either the teacher or the student. At this price point, there are better resources available.

Our favorite homeschool purchase!
A must have for anyone who loves to learn about nature! Bought with the intention that our family would use this for the school year (homeschooling 5 and 11 year old), but when we received it the kids were so interested that we used it all summer just for fun. We all learned so much! I love the hands on activities and the thought provoking questions that the author includes at the end of each topic. It is not just another "animal or plant encyclopedia."

It's OK
I had high hopes for this book as it comes highly recommended for those chasing a Charolette Mason style education for their kids. It does have some good info but mostly this could be thought up on your own. Ex birds. It tells you to have students look at feathers, look at their direction etc. It's big and bulky so don't plan on carrying it anywhere. It wouldn't be easy for a younger child to look up something they are interested in. Overall it's an OK resource but not one I personally found necessary.

Great Add To Our Homeschool
My kids have been begging to do more studying nature and nature walks and longer nature hikes, etc. We were happy to oblige them (ages 14, 13, 11, 9 & 4). We needed to help ourselves educate them & were recommended this book as an aid. It is EXCELLENT and we are so glad we bought it to start our nature journey! Now, it is not a field manual (way to big to take on a hike in my opinion) but great to finding leaves, nuts, bones, feathers, etc., and then working to identify them based on the questions in the book. Fun for the kids to research their "finds"All in all, a great purchase and we highly recommend!

Amazing Imagery
Lovely book. While actually written to the teacher who is preparing to teach nature study to children, the imagery is so fantastic that I can read this straight to my son while he looks at pictures on the computer about whatever topic we are speaking about. This allows us to learn about plants and animals that do not live in our climate, while still experiencing the author’s loving and precise descriptions of nature.I do wish it could be updated again with color pictures. Some of the pictures can be difficult to decipher.

Wonderful resource!!
Amazing! How one woman wrote this and had so much knowledge of the natural world is beyond me. The fact that she states the book is comprised of no more than your average 12 year old should know is a sad commentary on this tech-heavy world! I bought this as a reference for our home - we are homeschoolers and teach by the Charlotte Mason method, which is heavy on nature study. This is a book that should be in every home!

Outdated and boring.
I ordered this book for our ENWC curriculum. The book is quite outdated, small print, poor paper quality and all black and white pictures. Might be ok for upper grade level but definitely really boring for Elementary grades. I find the book boring as well. This book came in a very unsatisfactory condition. I don’t understand why Amazon workers always pack one book in a giant box where it gets toss around and gets ruined. Please have some respect for the books and the buyer. Thank you very much.

This book has so much great information and suggestions for things to do to learn about different animals, plants etc. Although the wildlife is North American, there is so much information and activities that can be done in the UK that it's still worth getting.
