STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

After the abysmal film that was The Last Jedi, I went into The Rise of Skywalker pessimistic. But regardless I wanted to see the movie because I am a Star Wars fan and I wanted to give my honest opinion on it. So after renting it on prime video and watching it. To my surprise, I loved the movie. It was entertaining, fast-paced, and action-packed. Most importantly it felt like I was watching a Star Wars movie. It was back to being a space adventure movie about good vs evil. The Last Jedi, while a Star Wars movie, felt more like a miserable nightmare. Rian Johnson, the director of The Last Jedi, subverted expectations, didn't answer any questions, and disrespected the saga. JJ Abrams came in and cleaned up the mess after The Last Jedi. We get our heroes back working together in Rey, Poe, Finn, C3P0, BB8, and Chewie. We learn about Rey and why she is strong with the force. We finally also get to see her train with Leia. It was also great to see Rey have an internal struggle with figuring out who she is and where she fits in the galaxy. It made her character seem more human. Kylo Ren continues to be the best part of the sequel trilogy. The scenes with him and Rey are the best parts of the movie. We also get more back story with Poe and Finn. C3P0 and Chewie also really get there moments to shine in the movie. Luke Skywalker is back to being the optimistic mentor who respects his father's lightsaber again. I thought they did a great job of handling with Leia after Carrie Fischer passed away. Seeing Lando again was also a nice touch. And the new characters that get introduced (like Zorri Bliss, Babu Frik, Jannah, and General Pryde) are also really good additions to the story. Emperor Palpatine was pretty cool as well. A lot of his senses felt like something out of a Horror movie. The visual effects were outstanding. Especially in the space battle scenes. The lightsaber fight scenes were intense as well. I thought the movie had a nice and fitting conclusion to the trilogy. The only issues I had with the movie was the Nights of Ren were underutilized. I would have like to see more of who they are and a bit of there origin. There were some other minor issues here and there but it didn't stop me from liking the movie. Overall, I loved Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker. It was nice to have JJ Abrams come in a finish what he started with The Force Awakens. As someone who was personally disappointed with The Last Jedi, Rise of Skywalker really helped patch things up for me. I commend JJ Abrams for doing so. (You could even watch Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker back to back while plucking out The Last Jedi completely.) I find it ironic critics bashed this movie But loved The Last Jedi 😒. But as you can see in the audience scores above the fans say differently. And I have to side with fans on this one. This movie and The Mandalorian have reinvigorated my faith in Star Wars. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. Overall score: 9/10

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I had high expectations for The Rise of Skywalker, and I'm happy to say that this Blu-ray version did not disappoint. This is a movie that's not afraid to tug at your heartstrings, and the final scenes are a poignant reminder of the power of hope and the enduring legacy of the Star Wars universe. Overall, I would highly recommend Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on Blu-ray to any fan of the franchise. It's a force to be reckoned with, with stunning visuals, powerful performances, and a story that will stay with you long after the credits roll. May the Force be with you!

Star Wars had an intrinisc theme ... the hero's journey, with Joseph Campbell as an advisor. In large part in the last segments this has been lost although there were shades with this episode ... at the end. Whether this matters or not is up to the viewer. The hero's journey underpins all the world's great myths that have antimated civilized culture (see Campbell's "Hero of a Thousand Faces"). This was an entertaining movie so start with the good. The special effects were stunning although through most of them it wasn't clear why we were seeing them, many non-sensical. The acting was excellent, top actors largely unknown performing very well. The 'application' of technology was well done although some of it a little goofy and other actions such as starting up a submerged starshp after decades a little strange as in 'what physics allow this?'. The other well done but somewhat strange and inexplicable was the projection of primary characters (with powers) across time and space (if you're dead, you're dead, aren't you?!). The worst was Harrison Ford as Han Solo. I liked it, and applaud its inclusion but if you think about it, Solo had no Jedi powers so by what logic can he project himself from the dead to interact? Steady ... it's a myth so it's OK. Myth aside and I love these, what is poor is the plot. The plot is disjointed, many times hard to figure out as in 'why are we seeing this?'. This comment doesn't relate to the dual plot lines being alternated, but to a single plot line that makes no sense in transitions. All we can do is watch and move on. This becomes so bad at points that you wonder 'why are we seeing this at all?', 'it does nothing for the story'. With all of the good, the plot is awful, even to the point of reverting to a part of Return of the Jedi of blowing up the shield generator on the planet (in this movie it was blowing up the navigation transmitter which is a technically absurd concept, implies galactic space ships are incapable of navigating on their own ... silly). Last, an idea at the end is Rey can't kill the emperor because the emperor's "spirit" would flow to her and she would be taken to the 'dark side'. Whether you believe this or not it sets up a strange ending when Kylo Ren returns to help. However, what should not happens, happens. So what happened to the emperor's spirit concept? Between the plot disjoints and dead ends, scenes included that have no meaning or lend little to the story, and several pieces of the story that make no sense ... like the emperor's spirit 'thing' ... what we are left with is an entertaining movie with very little connection to the 'hero's journey' and a muddled theme and plot. Enjoy it. Don't think about it.
