Excellent overview of the Healthcare Industry and its potential for going green
“Making Healthcare Green” is not only a worthwhile objective but the name of a very interesting book. Nina Godbole and John Lamb give us a wealth of information in their latest book. It is a timely topic and one that deserves significant public attention. The book provides an excellent overview of the healthcare industry today, an industry that is undergoing continuous change due to changing public requirements plus the advances of technology. There is a very good overview of telemedicine as one of the emerging fields in healthcare that holds a transformative potential. It can significantly reduce costs of healthcare delivery and also the possibility of delivering it with a much lower carbon footprint.Another area covered in great detail is IT, its role in healthcare delivery, its costs and its carbon footprint. Systems consolidation via new devices like blade servers plus virtualization is covered in significant detail. Always, in each area discussed, the opportunities for savings and lowering of the carbon footprint are discussed in detail. The book also covers in significant detail activities carried by various parties like industry and professional groups. A rich list of references is available for readers interested in pursuing topics in greater detail. There is a list of case studies in countries around the world; US, India, South Africa, Argentina and the UK.In summary, this book does a great job of showing the potential in turning healthcare green. It identifies the areas where savings can be achieved and gives ball-park estimates. The authors are encouraged to write a follow-on book with “How to” guidelines and methodologies; that would give users the ultimate guide for this important subject.

How to help climate change, and reduce Healthcare & IT energy costs using amazing technologies!
This is an amazing book, I wish I had come across it sooner!I am the technology advisor for an early stage venture capitol and advisory firm. We are seeing a rapid growth of Startups in the medTECH, energyTECH, Healthcare, Nutrition and wellness spaces, emerging with the goal to solve this very problem."How do we apply scientific practices to gain knowledge from the big data around us in Healthcare, while using the latest technologies such as cloud and analytics, to reduce Healthcare and IT energy costs, *and* having a positive effect on climate crisis by adopting Green IT."This book has excellent examples of how to improve a hospital's IT energy efficiency and is well organized. I am going to buy a few for our Startups in this space, and strongly recommend they read it.
