Exactly as advertised, but it does have its flaws...
This item was exactly what I had hoped for. It's really nothing but an emulator inside of a portable unit, but it works so well that I can't complain. It will play almost any Sega Genesis game file that you can put onto it (files must be in .bin format, though) and even some of the games it comes with are great, hard-to-find games (like the American version of Comix Zone). Of course, because it still is just an emulator, there are a few games that won't work on it at all but the vast majority of the Genesis library will play just fine on it. Just make sure to buy a regular SD card that is no bigger than 1GB if you want to add other games to it. Sound quality is not 100% perfect, but again it's a small unit and isn't totally flawless. Graphics look pretty good for a 16-bit handheld and are even pretty bright as well as backlit. Battery life is great and it comes with a USB wire to charge it. It can also be hooked up to a TV, but I haven't tried that yet as the unit doesn't come with the proper wire for that (any electronics store would have that wire, though). The overall feel of the unit as well as the controls are wonderful. The buttons feel similar to those of a real Genesis 6-button controller, but they respond a little better. Holding it, it feels very ergonomic (imagine a PSP with Genesis controls on it and you'll get the idea). Overall, it's a great deal for the money as long as this is exactly what you're looking for. Otherwise, I would say just to buy a PC game controller and just download any emulators/games that you want to your computer. However, if you want just a portable, all-in-one Genesis this is the only one I know of that is totally worth buying (especially for kids and people that are on long, boring car rides a lot).

Best Sega Hand Held Ever!!!!
I ordered this unit on May 29th, received it yesterday June 1st. So great service from this seller! First of all this unit is much smaller and less bulky than my Sega Nomad. I am a security guard and sometimes need something to keep me awake on those special overnight details. This does the trick and takes up less space! Like some people have said some of the games sound is off from the original, but considering how many games you get to start with and how many more you can play with an SD card it is very forgiveable! The games themselves depending on the emulater, are very clear and crisp on the screen. I have put like 40 games on the SD card already and have not run out of space yet. So you get alot of games to play! Definately read the instructions when you get it. It is easy to put the games on the card, they have to be BIN files or they will not work. Then you have to name the SD card GAMES for the AT to read the card to play those games. But like I said all in the instructions. I am very pleased and can not stop playing the games! BAD HABBIT, MY FAULT NOT THE DEVICES!!!! LOL

Sega Genesis portable problems
I purchased the last Sega Portable from @Games that had the cartridge slot. The cartridge would move slightly and freeze the game a lot. This latest new model with SD slot should be much more stable by using the SD cart instead. This feature could be the single reason to buy it. I got mine in the mail yesterday, but saw that they threw it over the patio instead of putting it in the mailbox. When I turned it on, I noticed that the small screen was bigger and better than last time. Charging the first time took much longer than 11 hours, more like 24 or more. Then, after it had been on for 20 mins, the battery started to die. Also, when playing the game, once the game buttons were pushed quickly during play, the unit froze up several times, reset, and the screen turned white a couple times. I'm not sure if it is because they threw the box or because these cheap game units usually have low quality. However, it may be the throw, because this one looks and feels sturdier and better than the previous attempt. The screen seems brighter and clearer. I tried the AV cable to the TV through a VCR and it did not work. . Looks like I set it up right but will experiment further. I definitely bought it more for use on a TV/Projector than as a portable. However, this one seems much more usable as a portable than the last one, the screen was just to small. Also, I had to buy an adapter. The previous model comes with an A/V cable, this one does not. So I used the old one and found it did not fit. The plug that goes into the unit is smaller than a headphone jack, so I bought an adapter at radio shack that makes the small one into a bigger plug the standard headphone size. There is a white and yellow for audio/video, and the plug that goes into the unit. Next, I tried the headphone jack with headphones and it worked. Haven't tried the SD card yet. Wondering if they will replace my unit because it is obviously defective. If it wasn't for that, I would say this a good, cool product.

For emulation I am suitable impressed
Let's get this review started with the bad: saves do not work so you can say goodbye to RPGs and other games that use that feature. It's emulation so the sound is not perfect and the built-in speakers (dreadful) don't help matters. Ok, now that that's out of the way... I picked up the AT Games Ultimate Portable Game Player on a bit of a whim, bouyed by a favorable review or two. The console itself is impressive, iightweight and compact but still easy to manage. I have big hands and while the unit feels like little more than a light piece of plastic in my hands, it remains comfortable to grip with a good button layout. Sometimes start is annoying to press as it is awkwardly placed above the 6 button pad (very cool since one of the bundled games is Super Street Fighter II) Boot is quick with a short AT Games splash followed by the menu. The menu is responsive, easy to page through, and includes screen captures of the games. Pick a game, press start, and the game boots. This is pretty flawless and is about as perfect as such a menu can get. Ports included are: mini-usb, headphone, SD Card, and A/V out. Any old stereo to composite cable will do but since those aren't really common now, you can pick up the relevant cable from AT Games' website (for $10 USD...ouch!) The A/V out lets you use the unit to play games on TV. Fantastic! The manual even includes recommended settings for your set to produce a good picture. Mini-usb is for charging (like Amazon and the Kindle, they assume you have a computer to charge with...an AC connector is separate, also on the website). Headphones are for headphones of course. The SD card slot takes a standard SD Card. Stick the card in the computer, make a folder labeled GAME and fill with ROMs to your heart's content. I'd read that only old SD cards work but the unit had no problem with my 8 GB SDHC card. Loading from card is slightly slower than loading from onboard storage but the games still play well. A menu button can be pressed to easily exit a game and bounce back to game selection which is fantastic. Again though, even with the SD card you can't create save files so forget about Phantasy Star. Loading from the SD Card gives you a list of ROM files by name but the screen only holds so many characters, so you may need to rename your ROMs from whatever nefarious source you acquire them from so that everything is tidy and organized. If you're not to worried about multiplayer or save games, this little guy is a pretty decent cheap way to have Genesis classics on handheld. The included 40 games are the usual roster of Sega classics (sans Sonic 3, first game I loaded on my SD card) plus 40 homebrewed games. These titles aren't to interesting but eh, I would have been happy with no games and just the card slot. It uses a cell battery that only gets a few hours on a full charge (garbage) but that's all I really need when I'm out. At home I like wiring it into the TV. Truthfully I came in expecting a software emulation based unit to be pretty unimpressive but I find I genuinely enjoy playing games on the device. It is less bulky than a Nomad, and the screen is pretty gorgeous. This is my first foray into AT Games line of portable Genesis machines and I like what I see. I hope they can work on that battery life and save game support in the next iteration of the machine. The sound will drive purists up the wall and I have no doubt that extensive play will review other odd bugs in different titles but for $45 USD I am pretty happy. This is a better solution for Genesis on the go than my Nexus 7 I think.

Really good portable Genesis.
This is a good product. Even though the game compatibility could be better the games that do work play great. The sound emulation could also be better but it is servicable. The SD card slot adds lots of replay value as you can try several games and hacks on it and see if they work. Simply add BIN format ROM's into a "games" folder on the root of the SD (not SDHC) card.

they look ok
update, I got them all, but 2 of them are missing chargers and VD cable, which sucks cuz the company has no policy for sending the missing parts. however, they asked me to send them the items back for refund!! I ordered 3 of them for my kids and I got two of them today and waiting the third to arrive soon. well, I opened one of them and played sonic lol. for me, it took me back in time when I got my Sega system :) the console is light in weight and the colors are good, but do not expect the games on there will look like psp or pc games. they are functional for young kids who never seen psp or other gaming consoles. I hope my kids will love them. by the way, the sound on this console is good :)

Not for the true Genesis fan.
This is the first time customer reviews for an Amazon product have failed me. And as a result, this is the first time I am writing my own review. For some reason, this experience reminds me of people who wear Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirts. You go up to them and mention how much you like the shirt, and they go off on how much they love the Turtles. However, when you mention something basic about the franchise, they look at you clueless. At this point, you realize that they are not true fans. They just like to show off that they pretend to like, or remember, something "retro". I see the same thing here. People are raving about how nostalgic this portable Sega Genesis system is. How it brings back memories and turns back the clock. I completely disagree. This is an awful piece of equipment for anyone who has ever played a real Genesis sometime in the past. The first thing you should notice when you start this thing up is that the sound is wayyyyy off. Any person who played Sega Genesis for at least 10 minutes back in the day should notice this instantly on any game. And it's so bad that it should completely contradict any true memories you had about the Sega Genesis. It's not the internal speaker that's the issue, but the inferior sound emulation used on whatever chip (ASIC) they got running in there. So yeah, you'll get the same problem when connecting headphones. Once again, people pretending to be fans won't notice this even though it's so awful that they should. Now, for a couple more technical details. At first glance, the screen looks way better than the Sega Nomad. Much brighter, better contrast, no blurring and this is because it is a good screen. The problem is the processing they use on the signal that feeds the screen. Because of the lazy nearest-neighbor interpolation (box filtering), there is very noticeable aliasing. This is particularly annoying on games which scroll at a moderate pace. You'll see the background details moving all choppy and looking distorted as you progress through the level. Explained better: the scrolling does not look smooth. That's the most noticeable result of this poor processing, but more experienced people can see it all over the place. Since I'm a video hardware engineer I can see this type of stuff happening easily, so I understand if standard users aren't that bothered by it. I tried asking the company what pixel resolution the screen is, but they never responded. When hooking up the system to an external display like a TV, the games look better. There are a couple minor issues though. Some colors saturate, so some complex backgrounds made of similar colors might blend together. I notice this on the start up screen of NBA Jam T.E. If I had to guess, the chip inside the system does a poor colorspace conversion when encoding the video to NTSC composite video. In addition, the right side is cut off by a few pixels. Not a big deal, but just something I noticed. The D-Pad is fine for normal games, but don't think you'll be able to make it through arcade mode on Super Street Fighter II. I messed around with this system for a day, put it back in its box, and tucked it away. I was thinking it could replace my Sega Nomad. I was wrong. Even with its size, battery, and screen disadvantages, the Sega Nomad is still the better choice for a true Sega Genesis fan. The sound problems are the deciding factor. Genesis sound has always been difficult to reproduce properly, but I've never heard it this bad before. For example, even the Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection for 360/PS3 has sound issues. In the end, I would only recommend this portable system for someone who has never played Genesis before, such as a young son/daughter.

個人的には商品化してくれただけで☆5個なのです。 発売を知って買えるのを待ちわびてました 当時メガドライバーを自負していましたのでコレクターアイテムとして買ってみました。 思い入れがあるのでMDは今でも本体引っ張り出してたまに遊んでおります。 正直昔のゲームはこんなに良かったんだと胸を張ってお奨めできる奴は あんまり入っておりません ソニックぐらいかな。 大味なゲームが多いです あとおまけの40本は遊べるのが1本でも有ったら 儲けものなレベルです 十字キーの入力がしにくいのでスト2あたりで遊ぶのは辛いかもしれません あとなんだかFM音源の音が変な気がするというかちょっと音が変です でも個人的にベアナックル2の音楽はやはり素晴らしいと再認識できたので良かったです。 FM音源って嵌れば最高にカッコいい音が出ますネ ロックマン ソニックシリーズ スーパースト2とスト2ダッシュ ベアナックル 忍 辺りが目当てな方はとりあえず買っても良いのではないでしょうか。 もう少し安くなったら保管用としてもう1台買うことにします。 MDを知らない方には☆3つ 当時MDで遊んでいた方は☆4つです ちょっと評価甘いかな(^-^;
