Bass Fuzz/Distortion

Most Versatile Distortion I Have Ever Used
The number of tonal possibilities with this pedal are unreal. I am considering getting a second one and sort of leaving them at opposite ends of the spectrum.3 band eq with LPF allows for complete shaping of tone and the RIP knob essentially acts as an envelope on the distorted signal, sweeping the distortion through the audio signal following play dynamics. The tone is so clear I can play chords with it, on a bass nonetheless.

Tech 21 Red Ripper
Very nice distortion pedal of great quality as are all of the Tech 21 pedals. I purchased this for the synth sounds that the review said the pedal had. I already have the Tech 21 Sans Amp Delux and the distortion/overdrive setting already gave me the dirt I need. I was dissapointed with the synth settings so I returned it. If you are looking for a distortion/overdrive pedal though, I would recommend the Red Ripper lots of room to tweak your sound.

Tech 21 Red Ripper
The Tech 21 Red Ripper does what I was told it would do. It has a solid metal housing and it is graphically attractive, but its sound is too aggressive for my taste.

Dub, Death, Doom, Distortion for your bass.
I have owned and played dozens of bass dist/OD/fuzz pedals (Arion,BOSS,DOD,Way Huge,MXR,EH,GK) and I think the Red Ripper is one of the most versatile pedals on the current market. The pedal is housed in a sturdy box with a quality textured paint job, rubber feet, solid plastic 9 volt battery clip, solid jacks, smooth momentary on/off switch, and smooth control knobs. The control knobs are level, mid, RIP, drive, low, high, and a push button low pass filter function. The Red Ripper can act as a fuzz, a bass distortion, or a clean bass boost. The sounds you can get from this box are similar to Bad Brains, Sleep, Repulsion, Godflesh, King Tubby|MASSIVE!|, Reggae, Misfits, and everything in between and beyond. The low pass filter and the RIP functions give the Red Ripper its unique signature sound. Cup your hands over your ears and then slowly move them away, turning the RIP knob around 4-5 will cause that same effect, as will the high knob. The low pass filter button will add an extreme boost to your bass, you've been warned!I play a passive Fender P-bass through a 1x15 bass combo.I use my Red Ripper as a clean boost (Level 7, mid 4, RIP 0, drive 0, low 6, high 10 and the low pass filter engaged, you'll never miss active pickups again) and the results have been so impressive that I took my bass compressor out of my chain of pedals. I also use this pedal to make my bass sound like it's being played off a telephone for a textural effect. There are so many tonal options the Red Ripper offers that I'm still experimenting with all the possibilities. This pedal is by no means your average distortion, so if you're wanting a traditional warm and woolly SVT sound I would say this isn't the pedal to buy. However if you're wanting a pedal that offers a wide palette of bass sounds and you enjoy experimenting with your sound, then this is the pedal for you. LAY DOWN THE LOW! -Omar Eduardo
