Disc 1 Timeless soul music Disc II Super Fly Sound Track
Curtis Mayfield is one of a kind. He makes great lyrical love songs, as well as some of the most politically & culturally aware songs of his era. I prefer the first disc of this anthology to the 2nd, because it's more spiritual. The 2nd disc is made up of most of the Super Fly sound track, its not bad but I've heard most of it countless times. However " The makings of you" is top notch. My favorite songs on the 26 song side one is (1)[Gypsy Woman], (7)[Sad Sad Girl & Boy] simply a sad love song, (8)[It's all right] One of the more uplifting songs on this CD "You've got soul and it's alright" "and everybody know it's alright", (10) [I'm so proud] A very touching love song "I'm so proud to be loved by you". A real deep song. (11) [Keep on pushing] Is the most inspirational song on the 1st disc "I know I can make it with a little bit of soul." Very moving song. (16) [People get ready] This is an old time spiritual song (Gospel like) "You don't need no ticket just thank the Lord". (22) [Man oh man] Is a tribute to exotic locals (Spain) & (France) and the beauty of a woman "I want to go back to the sweetness of time". (24) [We're a winner] My favorite upbeat song on the whole 2 discs "Don't let no one say you can't make it, beacause a feeble mind is in your way" "Don't mind leaving here to show the world we have no fear, beacause we're a winner."I was supposed to attend the free concert, the day of the tragic event that left him unable to walk, a real sad day indeed. His unique style I suppose will never be duplicated (I think D'angelo tried) and it will be sorely missed. I hope he now, walks with the angels (R.I.P) Curtis Mayfield.

THIS WILL LEAVE A IMPRESSION ON YOU by Richard J. Spanburgh
Curtis Mayfield will leave a impression on you with this 2 disc collection of his ABC Paramount hits and his Curtom Records label in the late 60's and 70's. Also included songs from the soundtrack of the movie Superfly. The songs that always take me back from this collection is the classic People get Ready from 1965. A song that has been copied by many other artists but Mr. mayfield does it the best.People don't realize the Impressions had many hits,Their records always made the top 40 and mostly always hitting the top 100 charts getting up to #10 to #20.And even higher on the soul charts. Songs like I'm So Proud ,Talking bout my Baby,Amen my favorite christmas song that was a top 10 record at christmas time in 1964. A soulful stylist Curtis Mayfield was, even in 1966 he recorded You've been Cheat'in on Me which sounds just like a Motown recording. This collection goes back and starts with recordings of the impressions just after Jerry Butler fronted the Impressions. And it goes into the late 60's as Curtis's hits lead a movement for the next generation of black teenagers to listen to songs like This is My Country,Check out your Mind and of course Choice of Colors. Why do I like this stuff I was a dee jay for 15 years and I wish I had this cd when I was playing music,I had 45's and tapes and cd's but this one came out later when I was retired. You want a piece of history in soul music buy this cd you will remember these songsforever, you'll say KEEP ON PUSHING.

the mighty Curtis Mayfield
when I was a teen in the '60s and a young man in the '70s my favorite male r&b groups where 1. the temptation, 2. the miracles, 3. the four tops, but at last, 4. the impressions. but as a mature black male by fare my favorite group is Mr. Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. This CD says it all ! the '60s and '70s are the golden years of R&B !!. only complaint is the case was broke and cracked. JSH

Critical
This anthology is critical to any music collection.I could end the review there, however it should be highlighted that this is a great collection that collects the best of Curtis's work both as a solo artist and formerly with The Impressions, whom may be one of the most underrated soul artists from that period. Make no mistake, some of the material he was writing and performing with them was and is as critical as any work he produced, and as a whole this double album is as near to perfection as you will find.
