A Mixed Bag With Misprints to Avoid
Considering the relative brevity of the Silver Surfer's comic series, it's somewhat amazing that his Epic Collections will run to at least thirteen volumes. This ninth volume (volumes 1, 3, 6, 7 and 13 are already available) points up the reason why. During his 90s run, Norrin Radd was inveigled in a whole lot of crossovers, spinoff series, events and guest appearances. Thus in this book we get ten issues of regular comic, a double-sized annual, a four issue miniseries and two issues from another book entirely. And it's all reasonably cosmic; Ron Marz is settling into his role as writer, introducing new characters like the warrioress Ganymede, the universal threat Tyrant and Captain Marvel's heir Legacy, as well as carrying on the threads of such villains as Nebula and Thanos. It's slightly derailed by a crossover with 1993's Infinity Crusade event, but as usual with the Epics, they keep the reader filled in with text synopses so that you are never lost. The Resurrection miniseries, teaming the Surfer with Adam Warlock, is fairly light but entertaining enough under the slightly psychedelic pen of the legendary Jim Starlin. Two issues of Secret Defenders are far less consequential, but do at least carry on the Nebula plot from the main book.Extras include a page of original art by Starlin and Tom Grindberg, trading card art of Legacy and an excerpt from Marvel Age. Unfortunately, a not insignificant number of copies of this Epic have arrived misprinted, with several pages towards the end of the volume lacking black ink, so it's worth flicking quickly through yours as soon as you receive it just to check that you haven't got one of the bad copies. If your book is in good shape, you'll find a reasonable amount of space-set fun here.
