Nature Obscura: A City's Hidden Natural World

This is a beautifully written book. The author is very knowledgeable about wildlife, and writes in a way that makes the information accessible to everyone. And, you don’t need to live in a city to enjoy this book. I live in the country and enjoyed every page. Highly recommended!

I live closer to the ground and photograph, journal, and video bugs. I see them. I don't always see what's behind them. I loved how the author took us to places familiar to me, and exposed a whole different way of looking at them. I especially liked learning about the interconnectedness between various speecies and their habitat. A native from Seattle, now living in Northern Alabama, I am exposed to a whole new ecosystem, and she has given me clues as to how to see beyond my subjects. I read this book in two sittings. I will read again...and probably again...because it is not only informative, it comes alive on the page for me.

Not since Pilgrim at Tinker Creek has a narrative work on nature held my attention and put me right there with the author. Each chapter reveals a new character in the urban ecosystem. Even though it focuses on creatures of Seattle, it has inspired me to look for the hidden natives of my small South Carolina city.

I really enjoy having this book around. I pick it up here and there, as the seasons change. The writing is very engaging, and I learn something new every time I pick it up.
