A well-crafted retelling
When I stumbled upon this book by pure coincidence a few weeks ago, I was immediately struck by the cover art. To be perfectly honest, that was probably 75% of the reason why I decided to give the story a try. I know, I know - don't judge a book by its cover and all that. But I can't help myself. I'm an artist. I love pretty pictures, and I especially love pretty book covers. I mean, that's the entire point of a cover anyway, isn't it? To draw people in? And fortunately, this book is far more than just a pretty cover. The story is a retelling of Peter Pan that centers on protagonist Wendy Darling, reimagined here as an orphan with big dreams of adventure who eventually ends up working for England's military in the fight against magical forces. Facing rigid societal gender expectations at every turn, Wendy is often severely underestimated, which she uses to her advantage on more than one occasion. Captain James Hook proves to be a worthy adversary for our heroine, and the constant battle of wills between them as each character attempts to out-manipulate the other makes for a fun read. Other important characters from J. M. Barrie's classic tale also make significant appearances throughout the story, including Peter Pan himself, Tinker Bell, John, Michael, and even loyal canine companion Nana. The story draws on enough familiar elements from the original to feel recognizable while introducing its own unique concepts to create a balanced, well-crafted retelling that keeps readers engaged from the very first page. All elements of the writing itself are excellent. The story moves along at a brisk pace without slowing down for dry, unnecessary descriptions, yet I never had any problems imagining exactly where I was or what was happening. You can tell that a lot of historical research and careful attention to detail went into creating the setting. One of my favorite things about the book was how the narrator felt like a character in their own right, with a keen wit and a sharp sense of humor that added something extra special to the story. I'm always a little wary of 3rd-person omniscient narrators, but it was done so exceptionally well here, and in such a way that the story couldn't have been the same without it.I'm so grateful I found this book. It completely captivated me. I read it in less than 24 hours, and it was a joy every step of the way. Honesty, my only complaint is that I have no idea how long I'll have to wait for the next book, and I want more now. I can already tell this is going to become one of my new favorite series.

Written magically, exceeded my expectations
I downloaded this book for free just for something to read because... why not, it was free. But man, did this book exceed my expectations! I’m not even a big fan of fairytale books but the way the author wrote, and the steady progression of the storyline, keep me reading for hours. I’ve read so many books and I must say, this has been one of my favorite reads so far. I must admit, the cliff hanger made my jaw drop in disappointment. I can’t WAIT for the next one!

3.5 after that ending
The book was great--I loved the writing style; the characterization was masterful and fun; I was dazzled enough that I would have immediately bought the second one if it were available (anticipated 2019). Wendy was a sympathetic and strong character. And the premise is so fun! Peter Pan but with secret agents fighting a war on magic instead of a bunch of kidnapped Darlings?? And Captain Hook as their superior officer! And I was pretty entertained by the way points from the classic story were slipped into this one (for example, Pan jokes about not having a shadow, because he only attacks at night).BUT... There were some annoyances.Pretty much every pubescent+ male wanted Wendy, and I didn't care, and she didn't care, and I wanted to stop hearing it. Especially in the case of John and Michael! Could they not be loyal to her just as 'brothers'-in-arms and friends without sexual tension? Then there's Wendy's 'secret kiss' in the corner of her mouth. What is that?? I tried to look it up to see if it was maybe an old term for a beauty mark, or a dimple, but got no results; and it got progressively annoying as it was referenced. I'm sure it'll be used eventually to give Pan a 'kiss', like the old story, but it was like itchy fluff in this book. The feminist angles felt a little preachy and contrived. And the ending was really unsatisfying for me. It's NOT a cliffhanger--looking back, the story started with Wendy's goal and ended with it--but I was more interested in Pan, and felt a little betrayed by Wendy's choice. Either way, I'm not a patient reader, and probably won't read the sequel unless it falls in my lap like this one did.

A genuine delight
The Wendy is a frothy, fun adventure yarn with twists of real darkness and comedy added for flavour. It features characters and concepts from Peter Pan but reimagined into something unique. Wendy is an orphan girl with ambitions outside what 18th century society views as normal for a girl – her dreams of being a ship’s captain leads her instead into clandestine military service, protecting England from the Everlost. The story is well written, entertaining and clever. If I have one quibble it is that perhaps Wendy is a little too idealised, but it’s easily forgiven in a story that is so much fun. Well worth your time.

Good read
The book is based in the late 1700 in london, it is about a orphanedteenage girl called Wendy Darling, should I say any more, it is a nice twist on a classic story, though I did find it confusing in places, I have just finished reading it and I will have to read it again, the fact that the authors have made it that the heroine want's to join the navy all I can say is GIRL POWER.

Surprising find. Surprising read.
This book just popped up on my Amazon recommendations, and I was intrigued by the storyline enough to purchase. I am glad I did - it's a superb retelling of Peter Pan, and I look forward to the sequel!

Good read
Good read. I did struggle to get the original Peter Pan film/book out of my head. This has the same characters but in a different situation. Once I had that sorted I enjoyed this book.

Unexpected pleasure
Expertly written, nice historical touches, enough non-stop action and still keeps you guessing. It's not easy task to rewrite the Pan, but this one works. Can't wait for the next instalment!

I highly recommend “The Wendy.” It is a must-read.
WOW! Just WOW! I think this is my favorite book of 2018 so far! It was amazing, amazing, amazing. Okaaay, sorry. I'll get to the review.I was captivated from the very beginning. The authors have a way of writing that enchants the readers and draws them into this colorful, exciting world. Their portrayal of the well-known characters from Peter Pan added to the charm one hundred fold. Wendy was fiery and independent and did not allow anyone to walk over her because she was a woman. Oh no, not Wendy. She showed them that she was not to be mistaken for a meek, powerless woman. Now Hook. What do I say? I don’t know, I loved and hated him at the same time. He was a bad guy, but there was another side to him too that I was not expecting to find. Finally, Peter. He was cocky and vain, but still had an air of innocence which made him totally loveable. Sometimes he annoyed me and sometimes I adored him.As I already mentioned the writing was stellar! I felt like I was reading a classic novel. :) The pacing was smooth and I felt engaged the entire time. Honestly, I couldn’t tear myself away! It was also a clean read and I was actually surprised at the low content of romance. This doesn’t mean that there wasn’t any at all, but it didn’t take center stage. This was quite refreshing and the fact that Wendy didn’t need a man to save her, made me love her even more.I highly recommend “The Wendy.” It is a must-read. I will certainly be keeping my eyes peeled for any news of a sequel.

you don't have to already be familiar with the story of Peter Pan to enjoy this book
In this imaginative re-telling of Peter Pan, Wendy Darling is an orphan who longs for a life of adventure at sea. Ignoring the insults and doubts of the other children, she is determined to master the skills necessary to one day command her own ship. At sixteen, Wendy seizes the opportunity to serve under the handsome but insufferable Captain Hook as one of the handful of women selected to help protect the country from a threat unlike anything they have ever faced; a mysterious band of magical beings abducting small boys. With the help of her fellow soldiers, Micheal and John, Wendy embarks on a dangerous mission to locate the enigmatic trickster known as Pan and his gang of Lost Boys. But the closer she gets to uncovering the truth, the more she worries that she's fighting for the wrong side. This book is a delightful and surprisingly hilarious new spin on a classic tale. Equal parts action-adventure and romantic comedy, you don't have to already be familiar with the story of Peter Pan to enjoy this book. Sky and Brown bring fresh magic and wonder to a well-known story, and provide readers with a skilled and cunning heroine, outsmarting her male counterparts at every turn, always staying one step ahead. Determined to forge a place for herself in this male-dominated world, this new version of Wendy Darling is determined to show these men just what it means to fight like a girl.

Intriguing concept
The rhythm of the book is well matched to a reimagining of Peter Pan. Characters are developed well past the flat disneyesque caricatures you might expect. Looking forward to seeing if the authors can continue the momentum

Slow read
I’m having trouble getting into this one. A new take on Peter Pan told from Wendy’s point of view.
