Is this the set that's closer to G Scale or is it small ?

its is a large train set much bigger than Hornby type sets

Can you turn the volume off of the train while running?

We haven't tried this train yet but my son had the polar express train from Lionel last christmas and the overall train noise on that one can't be turned off ..... although there are individual noises that are controlled from the handheld unit that obviously are then controllable. I hope this helps

Why does it beep? When it is turned on it has a constant beeping noise and is not linking to the controller

When you switch the loco on it beeps until the remote is switched on. Then it changes to the puffing sound when it is switched on. If switching on using the slide switch on the side of the remote you will eed to check the remote battery strength or correct orientation
