Q: Will this work directly with SmartThings Aeotec Hub which I have, rather than purchasing a separate Aqara Hub?

I don’t think so no. You can get a hub for as little as £29 sometimes cheaper with Amazon deals. I use a G3 camera hub so I couldn’t say it would work without one

Q: Any way to get an audible alarm on phone without M2 hub?

I have it connected to home assistant without a hub and get notifications to my phone. If you just want the water sensor to alarm to your phone the hub would be easier.

Q: My water leak sensor reports a poor zigbee signal when connected to an E1 hub. The sensor and hub are less than 1 metre apart. How to improve?

Not familiar with the E1 specifically, but if you've got any permanently powered Zigbee devices they will act as repeaters, and sometimes devices will make silly choices about uplinks. If the sensor wasn't near the hub when you paired it, try re-pairing it now it's closer. Maybe also try turning off any powered zigbee devices while your re-pair?
