Maraviglioso
I've been studying Italian for about 2 years. Sonia does a fantastic job of writing in a manner that reinforces what I've been learning, while expanding my vocabulary at the same time. I read the book into Google translate to make sure I'm speaking phonetically correct. I have done this with other short stories and sometimes the translation didn't seem right. I did not find that once in this book. Grazie mille Sonia

Fun to Read, Good for Learning
This is a rare combo. Usually the books you'll find for Italian learning are either: 1) Good tools for language learning, or 2) Interesting to read. Many of them are neither. One of the more popular series of "easy readers" in Italian features a series of stories with no plot. Every story unfolds as follows: the main character wants something, and then they get it with no resistance whatsoever. Not super interesting to read. This book (and the others by the same author) are fantastic in both regards. The grammar and vocabulary are things you'd hear in actual conversation. She doesn't use the literary past tense, which is only really useful if you want to learn Italian specifically to read or write books in the language. But on the other side of the coin, the language and vocab are advanced enough to challenge you, so that you can really grow from the effort. And the stories themselves are interesting enough to make you want to come back and keep reading. She really understands how to create suspense, and how to structure a story. These stories aren't going to win any awards. But they're the best you'll find in the realm of language-learning literature. And I can honestly say that I really enjoyed them.My only regret about the books written by this author is that there aren't more of them. Whenever the next one in the series is released, I'll be picking it up immediately.

Great for intermediate learners of Italian
The storyline is not sophisticated but still sufficiently engaging. The style is fluid, the vocabulary appropriate for the level, and overall very enjoyable.

Fun immersive language acquisition through comprehensible reading
I highly recommend this book to learners at the A2-B1 level. You will find yourself so immersed in the story that you will be actually thinking in Italian, not needing a translation, even though your skills are still limited. That’s a wonderful way to acquire the language naturally. The author’s writing skills are also very commendable. She knows how to build characters, how to create suspense, how to show not tell, and when to quickly summarize events to maintain reader comprehension and interest. Even though I don’t normally read crime stories, I really enjoy her books.

Another great book by this author
This is the second book I have read by this author. I do not know which I like more: this or Non Puoi Essere Tu. Both great. I just ordered a third book of this author. When I read her books, I like that I can understand what I am reading. I understand 80-90% of the words and therefore understand the essence of what is being said. Of the remaining 10-20% of words that I do not know, she makes it easy to infer from the context what the other words are. I have maybe only needed to look up 10 words between both books.I can also recommend taking lessons online with her which I have done many times. Great work Sonia!

Keeps you reading and learnng
This is a nice mystery story involving a young lady who slowly becomes wrapped up in a murder mystery. Solving the mystery brings passion to what had been a boring dreary life, and ultimately brings her closer to her family. It's a step beyond the previous book in the series in terms of language difficulty. Reading on a Kindle has the advantage that you can highlight text you don't understand and instantly see a Dictionary definition or Bing translation. On the other hand, every time you do that you have to contend with the Kindle throwing a Wikipedia lookup at you -- a "feature" which cannot be disabled -- so, it's a toss up as to whether using the Kindle is worth this annoyance.

well written and organized.
Very helpful for students with more than a beginner’s knowledge of Italian. The chapter reviews were helpful. I look forward to the next book.

The Plot Thickens
We have a six person Italian Conversation Group that meets weekly for one hour over Zoom. Recently, instead of a grammar book, we decided to use a reader that would help us with idioms, grammar and vocabulary without being overly dry and pedantic. La prossima vittima has proven to be a huge success. We read only one short chapter a week. But, that's enough to stimulate sufficient conversation to advance our language skills. We've only been at it for six weeks, but already we're using the conditional and subjunctive: Se fossi io, avrei andato alla polizia. After each session, we write on three index cards New Words, New Idioms, and Four Sentences worthy of memorizing. Eighteen index cards later, I'm speaking better and having fun doing it.

Can’t put it down! So good!
Such a great book. It is so hard to find books for beginners. I found it extremely engaging and hard to put down. Will be buying all the other ones as well. Would recommend to anyone learning Italian. Only wish there was audio.
