First, why does almost every cookbook have to start with a chapter on tools and pantry supplies? Unless it's a basic cookbook for beginners, do we need this again and again? Filler for books and a waste of space.Some interesting things here--your own home cured bacon, homemade sausage, and challah bread so you can make French toast. So this book is not a gathering of casseroles and traditional "Heartland" dishes, it's about meat and pancakes and biscuits with a gastronomic flare. Pages take up a lot of space with pictures of techniques like cutting the fat into biscuits and cutting them out. But if you want to replicate the style of food served at the inn, you'd want photos.Also recipes for homemade ketchup, pickles and berry jam and some cakes and desserts that are popular with the author's family. There are some drink recipes (like a cilantro-infused margarita) but most of the book is their take on things that come from local ingredients (like morels and steelhead trout) done up as fine cuisine.If you collect inn-style cookbooks with unique recipes, this if for you. "Heartlandia" implies Midwest; it's not. This is trendy West Coast relais-de-campagne type fare.

I love this cookbook! Interesting recipes, easy to follow...one of my favorites of my collection. Can't wait to try the wild mushroom recipes this spring...

It was awesome. This is actually the 2nd copy I purchased because a friend loved my copy so I bought one for her for Christmas. It came quickly and in excellent condition.
