Steve McQueen stars as a Boston tycoon who pulls off a daring bank heist just for kicks, and Faye Dunaway plays the insurance investigator who eventually falls in love with him in this Norman Jewison directed caper. Year: 1968 Director: Norman Jewison Starring: Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Paul Burke, Jack Weston Review: Classic movie with Steve McQueen & Faye Dunaway - I bought this US-import of the film as it had been restored to 4K-standard and I think this film needs to be seen in as good a format as possible. McQueen is good, stretching his acting chops a little, as the debonair Thomas Crown. Faye Dunaway, fresh of "Bonnie & Clyde" looks gorgeous; and she can act too. -What more do you want? As implausible as the story is the film holds you attention without any problems. Character actors appears in minor role, they help the quality of the film. Although I also like the "remake" with Pierce Brosnan & Rene Russo, I prefer the ambivalence of the ending in this version, to that of the new one; which is a bit too much Hollywood for my liking. With 2 commentary tracks; one by director Norman Jewison, also to be found on the UK-release, and another by film historians Lem Dobbs & Nick Redman, interesting insight into the making of the film, and Steve McQueen's persona, is revealed; not unkindly, as you feel both historians has a lot of respect for McQueen, but an honest appraisal of the man. The are also 2 interviews; one with Jewison, the other with title designer Pablo Ferro. The extras completes with a short featurette; "3 is a crowd" and a trailer. So a vast improvement on the extras over the UK-release. The new restoration also makes this film look and sound very sharp, I sense a real improvement on both scores over my old UK-release. Sadly, you'll need a player that can play Region A disc to enjoy all the goodies. So to companies that releases Blu-rays in the UK a plea; GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER, PLEASE! Review: OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE - I loved this movie not only because of the plot but the suspense and it is another great one for STEVE McQUEEN, this is the type of movie Steve stayed away from in the past because he was comfortable in jeans, sneakers 7 T-shirts. Actually I think as the poor boy he was he never had anything else & he felt confined in the dress up clothes. However he wore them with finesse as if they had been worn by him all his life & he looks handsome & with this character knows how to even display "money" although by this time he had plenty and at one time received the highest salary that was ever paid to an actor. Of course times have changed now. I believe at this point he was the most sought after actor than any other except Paul Newman was a close second. In this movie he does play wealthy but allow you cannot see it was not comfortable in this part but he sure looked sexy to me. He was shorter than most men, I think about 5'8" and one time they picked an actress for a part not knowing how tall she was so naturally Steve refused her! The movie touches on bank robberies and this is where the intelligence comes in because Steve planned them all perfectly. Go to desertcart & I think it is combined with 3 other movies so you will see them too. I have to tell you what happened on a tour I took and I mention it only because we are telling about Steve. I sat next to a lady I did not know and although she responded she did not start a conversation and movies or actors had not even been mentioned. About the 3rd day all of a sudden she tells me her husband has been trying to find STEVE McQUEEN movies and could not. I was shocked at first that she brought him up and I have seen so many & they are out there. I then asked if she had a computer and could go on desertcart but she did not sound familiar with it. I do get a magazine where many movies are for sale so I got her address and sent it to her. I will probably never see her again but I am sure I made her husband happy! Hooray for Steve! Bless you all!

This Time Will Never Be Again
After so many years I find myself returning to THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR again and again and again. There is a certain lure to this film. I was young then and as I get older look back at things I remember and savor. THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR was a highly stylistic film; the direction, the split screens, the score, the editing, the dialogue, the high fashion, McQueen, Dunaway, the glider, the beach, the dune buggy, Noel Harrison, the caper, "The Windmills of Your Mind" and so much more. If you love the 60s and the transition from old school to a new direction, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR had it all and stood at that pivotal point in filmmaking, but more importantly at a point of a society’s uncertain direction and future, but perhaps at a time we could just enjoy all the excesses and romance and special moments of a wink or a smile and perhaps a kiss. The film is unique because it stands frozen in time because of its transitional nature, yet at the same time, it stands entirely on its own for everything you see and feel watching this film and later, years later, savoring that special moment. I love it. I have to. It is part of me, and part of my youth and part of growing up. It’s in me. That’s the thing about films and times. Director Norman Jewison; this guy made films that touched me. I like almost all his film, but I love THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR in particular. This one is so special. There will never be a 1960s again. There will never be that special moment again. I love to think that I was there and felt it and now look back it and love those times.

Excellent
Director Norman Jewison saw visuals in multi-shaped boxes at the 1964 Worlds Fair. Jewison was more of an experimentalist than a stylist, and would try anything once. He used what he saw in the Thomas Crown Affair in 1968. The storyline of the film is straightforward: a millionaire, Steve McQueen, robs for the hell of it and has an affair with a beautiful women, Faye Dunaway. Solid: but Jewison's innovation here pays tenfold. He makes the aforementioned boxes divide the screen. Different shapes, different subplots, different characters--all at once. This is visually stunning. If you can envision those big front window treatments so many split level houses built in the early 1960s had in their fronts--squares and rectangles of different dimensions--this film adopts the same modernist device. Without plot, this would be an indulgence. But Jewison never places style ahead of story here, and so both work beautifully--art and entertainment welded perfect at the hip.

The real Thomas Crown affair!
The ML &the FL are dynamite together. They create such tension between them. It’s a steamy romance with what I consider an appropriate ending. I’m not going to tell you the ending and spoil it for you. You’re going to love it when you watch it too. Just a footnote;! Steve McQueen brings some of his real personality into the role. One example is the Dune buggy riding and the beach. Steve McQueen was known for being quite macho and he certainly is in this role. I love the background music for this as well I’m loving having the DVD. Thank you, Amazon for making it available.

One Of the classics!
One of the "All time classics" from Steve McQueen himself as a DARTMOUTH undergrad and Harvard MBA where he finally breaks away from his classics featuring him as a car racer, blah blah blah. I had once seen or read that this movie was extremely rewarding to him as an intelligent businessman dressed to the part instead of his great yet tired flics of being the car racer in days past! This movie has been viewed by my wife and myself many times although just now getting around to finally purchasing the DVD. WELL WORTH EITHER THE RENT OR THE PURCHASE, BELIEVE ME! BTW, I write this NOT to be bias in ANY way but it reveals that STEVE was versatile in his acting skills and so happened that I attended DARTMOUTH however was hooked on this great flick WAY before college was ever in my headlights! GO BUY IT OR RENT IT! It will put the "OTHER" phony knockoffs to shame! All the best, JP

The King of Cool Makes This The One To Go To
Many reviewers have mentioned that, in all fairness, that they feel the Pierce Brosnan remake of this movie is just as good as Steve McQueen's original, if not better. Point taken, and ack, um, (me struggling to get the words out), they're right. The 1968 version is a little dated, the music is almost painful, and the Brosnan screenplay is definitely stronger. The acting in the latter version has to be noted, as well - Pierce Brosnan has that coolness, coldness and shrewdness that needs to be brought to the role of Tommy Crown, and had a different actor even attempted to re-do this movie, it could have been an eighty car pile-up. But Pierce, god love him, ain't McQueen, and that's why this version should be bought, downloaded, however you can get it (I bought the new transfer off of Amazon just this week). McQueen brings the actual belief to his role that not only would the character of Crown do something like hit a bank just for the thrill, but you can easily imagine Steve McQueen himself, offscreen, lighting a cigarette, saying, "Ah, the hell with it," and doing the exact same thing, had the arms of Hollywood not reached out for him and given him all the material rewards he needed in his lifetime. Pierce...well, you never quite get past the feeling that his Thomas Crown, if it all came down to said and done, if it came down to that absolute moment of iciness, would say to Rene Russo (replacing Faye Dunaway from the original), "So, shall we see which one of us wins this thing?" Our man Steve would never let those words fleck from his lips; there's absolutely no doubt in his mind that he's gonna win, he's gonna get the lady and he's gonna spin dirt in everybody else's faces while he's doing it. Reviewing a movie with such a well-known plot is almost impossible, and I think that the best thing to do is to comment on the new transfer (much, much better than previous offerings, but still with an odd 'fuzzy' look and, here and there, murky sound to it that, despite this being made in the 1960s' does not seem to be intentional); the writing (again, the Brosnan version is more crisply written, but then, forty years later, the almost wordless chess scene between McQueen and Dunaway holds up, burns through the celluloid and needs no dialogue)and the original is interesting to watch for those 1968 cultural references, and character actors whom have slipped into some anonymity, unfortunately enough (remember the great Yapho Kotto?). When all is said and done, this is another Steve McQueen "Don't you wish you were this cool?" projects that, in fact, also offers good acting, able direction and production and a plot that does in fact get you to thinking about when is too much not enough, and what would you do to kickstart a stale morning? Oh, and those blue, blue eyes: Mercy, somebody bring me some water -

MUCH better than the remake!
Have always LOVED this original movie. So glad to find it on DVD! I had it on VHS but lost it and my VCR is broken anyway. This original version of the movie is so sexy in the chess scene! Or should say erotic and tantalizing. The opening song, WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND, won an Academy Award. It has always been a favorite of mine and just takes me away each time I hear it! The 60's edge is fun too. Two WONDERFUL actors! In the second one Faye Dunaway was the therapist. What a step down from her original part!

Ziemlich cool!

Interesting movie
The shipment came quickly, the package was in great condition. I really enjoy the latest version of The Thomas Crown affair with Pearce Brosnan as well as the original with Steve McQueen. Interesting to see the similarities but more so the differences between the two. Really enjoyed the movie.

Classic
They don’t make them like this anymore. Special and burning with chemistry between McQueen and Dunaway. Slick high gloss entertainment with subversive humour between the two leads in this caper of strategy in who gets the upper hand. Oscar winning song. Avoid the remake and watch the original.
