Escape from Pompeii Paperback – Picture Book, February 26, 2013

Purchased for an elementary gifted unit. An interesting perspective on the eruption of Vesusvius. Arrived on time and met buyer expectations.

I assumed - wrongly - that I could trust a children's book to be appropriate for children. This book introduces a family, lets the reader invest in them, then kills all but two children, and the children carry a deep sadness for the rest of their lives.I did not see or read the previous review, or I would have known. I am so sorry - my grandson was very distressed. Yes, of course it was a distressing event - but a child does not need to experience intimate, heartfelt loss from an historical event.

Informative book, with nice illustrations. Perhaps a bit too scary for a small child? I found it rather sad to read about two small children escaping the volcano and watching from a distance as all of their village and loved ones are buried alive. Eek.
