Learning the Virtues: That Lead You to God

Challenging and Inspiring
I was looking for a book to help me share the Christian virtues with my kids. I ended up being challenged, inspired and uplifted by Guadini's meditations. I was refreshed by the way Guardini demonstrated that each virtue is more than a rule or code, but an entry point into knowledge of self and of God.

Great meditation on virtue
This is a beautiful book. Romano Guardini was an important theologian prior to the second Vatican Council, but he also wrote wonderful books of practical theology. This is such a book. He explores many virtues including my favorites: courage, reverence and gratitude. He defines them, explains them, and references them to our relationship to God and God's relationship to us. Some of his reflections are quite profound; all of his reflections are beautifully written. Fr. Guardini was an important influence on Joseph Ratzinger. Sometimes as I was reading this book, I could hear Joseph Ratzinger as well. This is a good book to pray with and with which to examine one's conscience. If you don't know Romano Guardini - this is a great way to be introduced.

An excellent “debuzzifier”
Call Webster, it’s a new word! But seriously, Fr. Guardini does an excellent job of exploring the virtues we often politicize and gives them insightful definition. Liberals speak of “acceptance”, Fr. Guardini shows what it really looks like. Conservatives speak of “loyalty”, it gets the same treatment. “Justice”...well who doesn’t like that and come to contradictory conclusions about it anyway? Fr Guardini’s writing is clear as it is deep, and challenges while it comforts. Buy it-the buzzwords won’t catch you anymore!

Favorite book
I studied this book in college. I love to go back to it, choosing a virtue to meditate on each week. I've given it as a gift several times. It is something you could read over and over and always find something new. Guardini very simply breaks down each virtue, what it looks like on a human level, and how it reaches for God. He often discusses virtues that are overlooked. Great read. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to further their spiritual lives or understanding.

I want to immediately read it again!
This book was beautiful! I am so glad I found it. I can't wait to get my hands on more work by the author. I actually liked that it wasn't about the 7 virtues I am used to seeing. Fr. Guardini brings a philosophical approach to his writing that reminded me of such authors like C. S. Lewis and Peter Kreeft. Each chapter touches on a necessary virtue to cultivate in our lives, explaining what it is, why it is difficult to attain this virtue in this day and age, and finally explains in what way God shows forth this virtue by His actions. I just finished it today, and I want to immediately read it again!

5* One Of those Books That Tends To Change A Reader's Life
As I write this review, much of the country and indeed the world is under some form of lock down. These times of solitude are ideal for examining one's life in light of the Christian virtues. I would recommend this book especially for families wishing to raise up Godly and righteous children, and for any wishing to understand the world, the human race, and God better. Classical educators and church leaders in particular will fall in love with this text.
