How hot can you wash them?

Hi, you can wash them at 90 degrees without any problems. You can also boil them or wet them and stick them in the microwave.

Do these clean without the use of a detergent?

They are just like a type of sponge, you can clean up spills but there would evidently be no antibacterial action. I use a bio friendly detergent with mine and put the sponge in the wash at 60c on a regular basis.

How is this at water retention compared to microfibers?

I would say that they are more water retentive than Microsoft when wrung out and used the surface is dry. Be warned that they are not large and are more expensive, but I like them.
