Infighting and Ill Tidings
We're up to volume 3 in the Avengers West Coast Epics, with volume 4 following soon afterwards. Here we're covering issues from 1987 to 1988, and sad to say it's not the best of periods for the title. Before we get to the regular issues, though, the first 150 pages of the book are taken up with the Emperor Doom graphic novel and the annual team-up with the east-coasters; if you've been collecting the Avengers Epics as well, you'll have already read both in the equivalent volume from the same period.Once we return to the regular monthly, most of the focus is on Wonder Man and his Hollywood career and Mockingbird's fallout from her actions in the previous volume. The latter in particular leads to a lot of drama within the team - inter-hero conflict is, of course, a Marvel staple, although here it just seems to make the Wackos seem constantly irritable with each other.Steve Englehart and Al Milgrom certainly seem to have a plan for the book in mind, and their work is fine rather than great. The climactic story, in which a bunch of Hank Pym's old Tales to Astonish villains returns to haunt him, is a good example of the tone of this whole period; a promising basic idea that loses something in execution.Extras include a two-page Hembeck strip and three covers from previous collections of the same material. It's not an A-list volume, although several characters receive fairly important developments to their personal arcs. One for the completists rather than those after the finest periods of Marvel's history, I feel.
