works for dinghies and keelboats
I started sailing dinghies with my windsurf booties (below the ankle, like -no-see-um socks). Problem was, the hiking straps rode up above the top, so the hiking straps were directly on my skin. Ouch ! Got some Ronstan dinghy boots, the kind with reinforcing about the top of the foot, to take the friction of hiking straps. Perfect ! Almost. Problem here is water sometimes gets in over the top, and regular socks deal with the water extremely poorly. So I tried these. They work great and they don't just collapse if they get some (a lot) of water in the boot, like during a (common) capsize. Now I sail on keelboats, I never get in the water. Except for the (heavy) spray of plowing through 5-6 foot chop when working upwind in 20+ knots, even 30 feet behind the bow, you still get wet. My running shoes offer no protection whatsoever: back to the dingy boots ! (and these) socks. As others have said, they are extra thick, so don't count on putting them in regular streets shoes or close-fitting neoprene dive boots. They work really well with my Ronstan boots, and probably with any sailing-specific boot. When I went to re-order more, for extended cruising trips, I was served an ad for the longer version of these. I double-checked the height. These are already boot size, and they are about 1 inch above the top of my Ronstan boots, so the longer version isn't necessary. If you have extra tall boots (mid-calf) you might consider the longer version, but these work well with ordinary size boots.

Waterproof
They do what they say! Thick so hard to fit under sailing boots but still--very cool!

Great but thicker than I expected
I use these for walking into the water at the beach. Because they are so thick, so only fit in certain shoes.
