Very Good Grips With A Few Caveats
I can now answer my own question that I originally placed here regarding whether or not the clutch when fully engaged it’s the flared ends of the grip. I’m happy to report that the clutch lever does not touch the flared ends when pulled fully inward. Someone on another website said that it did and provided photos. He either had a really old Harley or he did not fully push the grip on so that this would not happen. On my 2019 Slim, it works perfect. Now for the “problems”. The clutch side grip has a dual flare on the side of the grip that fits into the left side control pod on the handlebars. The problem is that it is slightly too large all around this flare in order for the control pod to be fully tightened up without play (looseness on the handlebars). For my 2019 Softail Slim, I had to take a razor blade to it and remove a thin layer of this plastic all the way around. Once I did this and inserted this “grip flare” into the control pod, it tightened down without any slip on the handlebars. The throttle side does go on much easier, however, it seems like there is a lot of friction from the flare on the grip for this side which goes into the throttle side control pod on the handlebars. When I first attached it, there was enough friction that the throttle grip would not return to the idle position for the throttle. You have to loosen and sort of jiggle the new throttle grip and pod assembly all together and then it will all seat properly without this friction. I did put a mall amount of PTFE light grease onto this throttle grip side with the flare. My throttle is way more sensitive now than from the old stock grip throttle. It will take some time to get used to, but I can tell you that in my opinion it is a big plus. These grips with the gel insert are very comfortable. It’s hard to believe that Harley puts such cheap grips on to begin with. The Avon grips surpass them in every way imaginable. If it were not for the fact that you have to modify the flare on the clutch side grip a little in order for it all to fit properly, I’d give five stars. You just shouldn’t have to do that and I fiddled around with the clutch side to try and make it work first before I reduced the size of the flare.Overall these are very nice grips and they look so much better, not to mention they are so comfortable.Hopefully, this review may answer any questions out there.Cheers
