A Thinking Middle Grader's Dystopia
Most of the popular dystopian novels for younger readers that I have read recently rely most heavily on adventure/action. Think Hunger Games or Maze Runner and the like. And, they are fine books. This one is different. It is much more like a quest novel, with a thoughtful calm overriding everything else. Sure, there are dangers, and escapes, and close calls, and villainous enemies, but no attempt is made to make any of that feel truly threatening. And there is no heroic derring-do; not a single hero ever lays a hand on a single bad guy. The good guys talk, they reason, they argue, they convince, they show the other guys a "better way", and so they win out. This is a slim book. The alt-world is just sketched in. The plot is sort of obvious. The characters don't exactly break new ground. But, you know, you could almost say the same thing about "1984" or "Brave New World". So, a young reader's book of ideas, (equality, planning for the future, caring for others, individuality, sacrifice, nobility, loyalty, respect, dignity), wrapped up as an adventure story. Not bad. (By the way, if you sample the first chapter, bear in mind that this book takes a little time to get going, so the sample will give you a good idea of the writing style and the vocabulary, but not so much the eventual story.)

A fantastic book for pre-teens.
I bought this for my students to use in a read along in class. The kids loved it. There was much to discuss and the journey of the main character was fun to follow. I wish there was a sequel to this book because I know my students would love to read it as a class. This was the first book I've ever used as a read along in class and it was a fantastic experience. Many of them read ahead because they were hooked and then they fidgeted in their seats knowing what was ahead. That was funny to watch!

For my son
Part of summer reading and he seems to like this book. He loves comics/graphic novels and I find it difficult to find regular books that he enjoys and so far he is enjoying this book.

Great for teens
My 14 year old loved this book. I read it as a kid and I always thought it would make an interesting movie. If your teen likes sci-fi this is the book for them

Book For Any Age
I read this book unaware that it was written for a younger age group. I am 68-retired educator-and found this to be a very important book for everyone to read. More and more people are relying on electronic devices to entertain themselves--BUT NOT READ!!!! Immerse yourself in this book--when finished start on another and then another--read all the books you can--is it possible that there will be no more books in our not too distant future?? Nothing like holding a book in your hands--fan the pages and breath in the words--the ideas--the enjoyment--every time I read a new book I am amazed at how many great authors we are blessed with in the world-

Inspiring
I first read The Last Book in the Universe in 2000 when it first released. It took me finding this book and rereading 19 years later it to realize the impact it had on my life. In 2000 I started writing in a green notebook. Little did I know that this story would start me down the road of my current journey!

Beautiful portrayal of a dystopian future
Fantastic book with likable characters, interesting plot, and insightful dialogue. I read this book in the 9th grade and reread it in the 11th grade and it doesn't fail to amaze me with its ubiquitous message of a future without books.

Highly recommend!
Read this book in highschool and decided to buy and read it about 5 years after and it's just like I remembered. For some reason I really loved it in highschool and I am not at all a reader. This is one of the few books I have actually finished in my life. Defiantly a very easy read, finished it reading off and on in an afternoon.

Interesting
Just needed it for school and I thought I wouldn't like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Besides the fact that it's a little drepressing it is quite interesting. Not what I would call a page turner but it is quite fun.
