Building Bone
Just started reading the book and real interesting. I had a fracture while on vacaton September, 2013.No fall, I was getting dressed and the left hip fractured while I was in my hotel room. I just could not believe it andhad been on Reclast for two years. Had a excellent bone test in July of that year. I will never take another medication andshould have read more information about the meds' but had followed doctors advise. Now I'm sorry but never want to experence that again.I am worried about my right hip but hope that does not fracture.

It's Not What My Doctors Have Prescribed
If you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis your doctor has probably recommended more dairy, calcium supplements, and weight bearing exercise. He has probably mentioned various drugs available for you to consider. Here is another, possibly more effective route to try based on low-acidic eating. This book can help you define a diet that may contribute more to bone strength than the "high calcium" one you may be eating now. Every few weeks I drag this book off the shelf again to review and improve my diet. I might need to show this book to my physician. The research upon which this study is founded is all included in the appendix.

Fascinating, very informative, glad i read this
An interesting nutrition theory. My endocrinologist didnt agree with it so jnstrad of following it to the letter (eliminating all dairy) i simply hedged my bets and whenever i consume something acidic (dairy, meat, etc) i combine it with something alkaline (beggies, etc). The two most helpful pointers are 1) how incredibly alkaline raisens are and 2) how HcTZ helps to keep acid levels low. (I needed another bP rx anyway so timing was good. And bith the cardiologist and endocrinologist are happy! Brilliant!

lots of misinformation
I bought this as a companion to "The Myth of Osteoporosis" after being diagnosed with osteopenia. I did not want anything to do with the drugs suggested by my doctor and decided to educate myself about nutritional options. I figured that something in my metabolism was amiss to cause this condition. Acid/alkaline balance seems like a good explanation and I thought this book would offer a good program to work with. There is a lot of information in it, but misinformation as well. An example: in the chapter discussing overeating of protein as a possible cause of osteoporosis it states that the average person requiring 2000 calories a day only needs 50 grams of protein. This is fine- but then she states that 50 calories of protein will be supplied by 2 oz of chicken breast-THIS IS FALSE and way off. Meat or fish has about 7 gm of protein per oz so you would need about 7 oz of meat a day to meet your need. If you followed her advice- you would be protein deficient which is also very bad for your bones!Lots of her "science"seems very loose. Like stating that her nurse friend never observed any osteoporosis in Cambodia. True perhaps. But I lived in the region for several years and know that there are few people living in Cambodia over the age of 60! The Khmer Rouge/killing fields and extreme poverty is the cause of this. The acid/ alkaline charts are scattered throughout the book and none of them are very complete. For a book that proposes a diet plan, a thorough list in the appendix would be more usable. Also, many of the values directly contradict what I have seen on credible websites- like Susan Brown. She is a big proponent of greens and vegetables- this is very good as most all of us need a lot more than we consume. But she gives the impression from he recipes and writing that one should eliminate meat, fish, cheese, milk from your diet entirely and replace it with soy, grains, and lots of veggies. I dont think this is practical for everyone or necessary. She seems to feel that grains are better than milk for protein- yet skim milk has a very low acid value compared to most grains and is a good protein source. The best advice in the book was to balance a serving of protein with 2-3 of vegetable/fruit to balance the acid. But that nugget wasn't worth 17 dollars!I'm really surprised that this book has such rave reviews- guess it shows how badly the world needs a GOOD WELL WRITTEN AND RESEARCHED BOOK ON ACID/ALKALINE BALANCE.

American pharmaceutical companies must hate this book
I found Building Bone Vitality enormously useful. She backs ups her ideas with sound science, and it goes along with everything I've from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Dr Michael Greger's Nutrition Facts org site. So many doctors peddle the idea that osteoporosis can't be reversed, but it can. There was one item of information I'd like to see added to Table 7.2 Plant Sources of Calcium on page 69. The reason the US recommendation of 1000 mg of calcium is so high is because it's considering the average SAD-consuming sedentary American. But anyone following a plant-based, weight-bearing solution for osteoporosis won't need that much calcium. The World Health Organization recommends only 400 to 500 mg a day.

best book on bone health out there
Yes, there are alot of books out there on bone health. But put them all aside and clear your book shelves because you'll only need one book now and that is Building Bone Vitality. The authors are impeccable with backing up every word with thousands of scientific papers steeped in evidence based research. Very important table to check out - Table 7.1 - The Effect of Common Foods on Acidity of Urine. What I especially enjoy is that not only is it informative for the layperson but health professionals such as myself also learn about a subject that seems to be all over the map in terms of solid scientific recommendations. Overall, easy read, super informative, inexpensive price. 5 stars!

Boring, blah blah blah.
Not going to get your answers directly in this book. Inconclusive studies give rise to this reading like a seesaw. Bottom line we are designed to eat clean unadulterated unpolluted small amounts of meat. All the others fluff and boredom. Don’t waste your time or money on this. You get more out of a five minute YouTube.

I tried the medication my doctor recommended for this state and had horrible side effects
This book is my introduction to how to avoid broken bones now that I'm in the osteoporosis state of my old body. I tried the medication my doctor recommended for this state and had horrible side effects. I decided to go off the medication and make major dietary adjustments to help my bones myself. This book is a wonderful introduction to how to make a difference.

Essential reading for anyone concerned about their bones
I found this after being diagnosed with Osteoporosis. If I had this information ten years ago my bones probably wouldn't have got that bad. We are told by our doctors and other nutritional advisers to eat lots of dairy products for strong bones... WRONG. Proteins especially dairy cause bone LOSS if not buffered with enough fruit and veg because protein is acidic... the clue's there, amino acids! Our bodies then have to balance the acid with the easiest available source of alkali, calcium, by releasing it from our bones! So if you want strong bones for you and your family please read this book. And avoid crippling fractures and awful drugs.

Has some tips on bone health
After cancer treatement, I was diagnosed with osteoporsis. My doctor prescribed Actonel which I later learned is extremely bad for bone health. I suffered almost every side affect listed so I stopped taking the drug. I was looking for a natural way to build and maintain by bone health. This book has some good tips on building and maintaining bone health but it also suggests using oral bisphosphonates (Actonel, Fosomax etc) which has been proven to cause major issues with your bones including unexpected femur fractures (like while you are walking). That is why it gets a 3 rating.
