My favorite from childhood!
My grandmother had this at her house when I was a kid, and I was so happy to find a copy for my own children! It's just as cute and silly as I remember .

A childhood favorite
I loved this book as a child in the 80s and was sad that it was out of print when my older child was born and we were selecting books for his nursery. And then this past Christmas I looked up this book on a whim and here was a paperback copy I could get in 2 days!! My kids, now 5 and 3 loved this book and asked for it to be read to them every day for a week. The illustrations and story delight us all. I hope they reprint more of Smath’s books.

Inspired a lifelong love of elephants
I absolutely loved this book as a child. Drove my mom crazy with how often I made her read it. Over 30 years later I bought this book for my kids. It’s a paperback, so it’s not quite built for three kiddos being rough with it; it looks very well loved but the cover has held up and no pages have come out, which speaks to quality.I have loved elephants my entire life, and I’m sure it goes back to this book. The pictures are charming, the story is sweet, and even little ones can enjoy saying “but noooo elephants!” each time the pet man visits Grandma Tildy.

Remembered from my Childhood
I remember my mother reading this to me every time we went to the orthodontist because he had it in his waiting room. It was one of those books that I demanded so frequently that my mother starting to beg me to let her read me any other book.I couldn't believe it when I was able to find this for my own 18 month old daughter, but there it was on amazon. I didn't think she would like it until she got a little older because it's definitely wordier than a lot of her other books but boy oh boy was I wrong. My daughter absolutely loves this book, and now we've started to read other story books to her as well. This is definitely her favorite but we've also had some good luck with "Annie and the Wild Animals", "Engine, Engine No. 9", and "The Best Nest".The book is all about Grandma Tildy who is willing to buy all sorts of pets who enrich her life and help her around the house. She repeats over and over to the pet man that she is willing to buy all sorts of animals "But No Elephants". At the end of the book she gets stuck with the Elephant anyway but even he proves to be useful.I think my daughter likes all of the animals which she can point to and recognize; she likes the household activities mentioned such as cooking stew and giving an animal a bath; finally I think she really likes some of the repetitive elements which help her predict what is to come.

Re-found old favorite
When my grown up children were small 'No Elephants!' was a favourite book. A recent addition to the family, our first grandchild prompted a lengthy and happy family discussion about books which my son and daughter loved when they were small. So I was absolutely delighted to find this book was still in print. I bought them a new one each as the original was very well worn! My son now reads it to his 4month old daughter and she listens with rapt attention. Perfect for toddlers upward as it has a lovely repeated tag line making it easy for them to join in.
