~~ Don't miss out on this one! Well worth it if you want to change your health! ~~
Just what is an alkaline diet? According to the author, a nutritionist and diet coach, "the diet shuns refined grains, sugars and rancid oils and instead focuses on leafy green and vegetables, healthy oils and fats, and some nuts, seeds, gluten-free grains and low-sugar fruits." Supposedly an easy diet to follow - 80% alkaline, 20% other. That does not mean that your 20% can be junk food! Nope, it needs to be high quality, unprocessed food.WHOOPEE! Laura likes Kerrygold butter. (Our favorite!) She also warns/informs the reader of the necessity of soaking nuts BEFORE consumption. Have you been eating the SAD (Standard American Diet)? Then you may want/need to do the 7 day cleanse first. EVERYTHING you need to know on how to is provided in this book.Laura encourages you to keep a diary. The recipes are listed at the beginning of each section.WARNING! Whilst this book gives the appearance of being gluten-free, there are TWO recipes that I have found that are not! Spelt, an ancient wheat, is NOT gluten-free so please, please, please do not use it in the Spelt and Maple Biscuits and Tomato Spelt Pasta recipes. As someone who has an intolerance to gluten, I have tried spelt in the past and cannot use it. HOWEVER that has not prevented me from making use of some of the other delicious recipes in this book. I really enjoyed the Blueberry Porridge this morning made with organic Buckwheat Groats. Who ever thought of eating chocolate pudding for breakfast? Laura has! You'll want to try out the Chocolate-Chia Pudding one morning.LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the helpful charts at the end of the book listing different foods, in categories, and whether they are:High Alkaline * Medium Alkaline * Low Alkaline * Low Acid * Medium Acid * High AcidYou will likely reference this section over and over again until you learn what each food is.IMPORTANT TO NOTE that whilst this book contains ONLY vegetarian recipes, Laura does recommend consuming high quality meats etc. The details of what to purchase and what to avoid are all in here. It is very easy to add those ingredients to many of these meals. This book is a definite keeper in our house. I have already highlighted many, many of the pages and am looking forward to cooking many of the other recipes. I was provided a copy by the publisher. Thanks, Liz
