Hammershoi and Europe

If you've never seen paintings by Hammershoi this book will convince you you're missing something; plentiful illustrations of decent quality, and some interesting essays. It you already Hammershoi you can keep this at hand to remind you of his accomplishment.

This is a splendid book, with serene images of his work. The essays are insightful and well written. Very reflective - domestic scenes, internal details and landscapes with subtle layering of muted tones.

Beautiful beautiful timeless works by a lesser known artist.

It is a rare but intense pleasure in your late 60s to come on a new master painter. We first came across Hammershoi at the Royal Academy's exhibition The Poetry of Silence in 2008. We were stunned by this fin de siecle Danish painter whose carefully controlled gently lit, restrained interiors breathe memories of Vermeer, Whistler and Degas. They capture the air in a room in the way you sense in front of Velasquez Las Meninas. Hammershoi's people, usually his wife, usually in rear view, hint at alienation and repression. Their loneliness pre-figures Hopper's lost souls. This book captures all those images and more from a later exhibition jointly curated between Denmark and Germany in a splendid series of colour plates, together with some interesting essays. A must for lovers of intimist interiors, Hammershoi fans and those seeking to expand their European art horizons.

Very detailed history of Hammershoi and the paintings he created. There were also many clear photos of his work with explanations.

While it's great to have a book on Hammershoi at this price, the image quality is disappointing. Many are low resolution which have been blown up to a full page. It's also good to have context to his paintings but when half of the paintings featured in the book are not by him it's a bit much.

Un ouvrage qui donne une excellente présentation d'un peintre qui est l'un des plus importants de son siècle en Europe. Hammershoi est un peintre au style particulier, qui révèle souvent des personnages de dos dans des intérieurs de maisons danoises. Sa peinture possède un caractère intimiste qui n'a jamais été égalé par d'autres peintres de la même époque.
