I love Hitchcock's movies and he never disappoints. I love silent films so of course I loved this one. Great story with all the usual greatness of Hitch to go with it. I wouldn't say it is his best but, for a movie made in 1928 (I think) it is wonderful. More humorous than many of his others. If you like silent movies you will love this one and if you have never watched a silent film I would recommend giving this one a try. Chaplin or Keaton are probably the best to start with. I dare you not to laugh or cry.

Very fast delivery. Buying used never look so good! The entire collection of DVDs are in excellent condition.

curious i watched it having looked for a hitchcock film. I found this entertaining and a bit weird at the same time. It starts off very sad and the father is sympathetic and deep, then suddenly he becomes a total arsehat, which was weird. There is no need for dialogue, its all very expressive from the camera angles and shots, to the facila expressions of the actors. well done

Even Though a silent picture I enjoyed the story. The actors conveyed the emotion of the characters without words. I was curious and researched some of the actors, finding out that the handy man was an ancestor of actress who played 'Jane' Bennett in production of Pride and Prejudice along with Colin Firth.

I've never actually watched a silent film prior to this one, and I'm amazed by how easily we could understand exactly what was going on. It was even better because my husband felt his emotions and would spit out what he would be feeling at that moment! This is a fun couples movie.

About as shallow as the modern movie Playing for Keeps. This movie is about a man who's wife just died and he quickly goes around shopping for women. Even though it's played for laughs, the characters are not sympathetic and the symbolism is more obvious than a children's book. The only reason to watch this movie is to laugh at the dated sexism and interesting acting from the time period. But the story and pacing is so bad, I could easily rate this 0 stars. I'm surprised it's from the mastermind Alfred Hitchcock; only watch if you're a die hard fan and hate your life.

Didn't care for it at all.

It's silent, but it's good. I bought this movie as part of a collection of early Hitchcock films. If you're looking for what most people would think of as "Classic Hitchcock" with lots of suspense, intrigue and dead bodies, then you'll be bitterly disappointed. If you are looking for a delightful story told by a master, then you'll love this movie. The most suspense I experienced was wondering when the farmer would finally open his eyes and see what was right in front of him.

Für jeden Hitchcock Liebhaber ein muss! Sein Gesamtwerk ist nur mit diesen Frühwerken wirklich vollständig! Die Box an sich ist ebenfalls sehr hübsch!

Deludente, questa edizione tedesca. La qualità video è pessima, e per tutta la durata del film è sovraimpresso sullo schermo il logo della casa distributrice. Sconsiglio assolutamente l'acquisto, anche se proposto ad un prezzo vantaggioso.

This is a great set, an absolute must for anyone interested in the film career of Alfred Hitchcock, with some of his earlier British films (including 4 silent movies), lovingly restored and with some wonderful extras, most notably an hour long documentary on early Hitchcock. It's amazing how great these movies look on this new masters (infinitely better than all previous releases, that can now be easily dismissed). I just hope that Studio Canal and Optimun Classic get round to release soon the rest of the British films, particularly The Lodger, the first true Hitchcock work only available so far in unwatchable transfers. Some of these films may not be great works of art, up to the standard set by the master in his later opus, but in all of them can be found moments and ideas which speak loud of a real genius in working process. Don't miss it!

Meine Rezension bezieht sich sich auf die britische 9-DVD-Box "The Early Hitchcock Collection" von studiocanal und Optimum Releasing, die aus irgendwelchen Gründen inmitten der verschiedenen Ausgaben von "The Farmer's Wife" versteckt ist. Und das meiner Meinung nach völlig zu Unrecht. Diese Sammlung an Filmen ist nahezu perfekt, lediglich kleine Makel sind aufzuweisen.Der Inhalt ist folgender:Stummfilme:The Ring (Der Weltmeister, 1927)Champagne (Champagner, 1928)The Farmer's Wife (1928)The Manxman (Der Mann von der Insel Man, 1929)Tonfilme:Blackmail (Erpressung, 1929)Murder! (Mord - Sir John greift ein!, 1930)The Skin Game (Bis aufs Messer, 1931)Rich and Strange (Endlich sind wir reich, 1931)Number 17 (Nummer 17, 1932)Ich werde die einzelnen Filme hier nicht bewerten. Ich gehe bei davon aus, dass Kaufinteressierte sich schon ein wenig mit Hitchcocks Filmografie beschäftigt haben, oder zumindest ein generelles Interesse an diesem besteht. Die Filme entstanden während er bei British International Pictures angestellt war. Hitchcok hat in seiner Anfangsphase verschiedene Genres ausprobiert, um seine eigene Handschrift zu finden und somit haben wir es hier nicht nur mit für ihn typischen Thrillern zu tun, sondern auch mit Liebesdramen, Komödien, Moralgeschichten und einem Whodunnit.Bild:Das Bild ist traumhaft restauriert. Vor allem in Anbetracht des Alters der Filme wurde hier eine hervorragende Leistung erbracht. Alles ist scharf und fast völlig rauschfrei. Nur eine Sache wurde nicht verbessert: Das "Wackeln" des Bilds wie es häufig bei analogen Filmen vorkommt. Das stört nur bei den Texttafeln, weil es nur dort auffällt. Im restlichen Teil des Films ist es nicht zu bemerken. Ich denke, dass es den Filmen noch eher einen Charme verleiht. Vor allem in Anbetracht, dass viele Rezensionen zu den verschiedenen Farmer's Wife Versionen hier eine furchtbare Bildqualität beklagen, ist dies eine willkommene Alternative.Ton:Die Stummfilme haben alle eine hervorragende Kavierbegleitung, die perfekt auf den Film abgestimmt ist und nicht einfach aus der Dose kommt. Gerade Personen, die Stummfilmen eher abgeneigt sind, können hier regelrecht "bekehrt" werden. Die Tonfilme können hingegen nicht ganz mit der Tonqualität mithalten. Vor allem Murder!, The Skin Game und Rich and Strange leiden unter enormem Rauschen und dem Fehlen der hohen Frequenzen, was alle s- f und sch-Laute verschluckt. Gepaart wird das in The Skin Game zusätzlich noch mit einem Brummen in einigen Szenen. Ich gehe allerdings davon aus, dass das dem Alter der Filme und der damaligen Tontechnik, die noch völlig in den Kinderschuhen steckte, geschuldet ist. Eine bessere Qualität ist auch nirgendwo zu finden und letztendlich muss man sich wohl oder übel damit abfinden. Eine deutsche Tonspur gibt es überhaupt nicht, da es sich hier um ein englisches Produkt für ein englisches Publikum handelt.Allerdings fehlt dieser Box ein wichtiger Zusatz, der diese Probleme wieder wett machen könnte: Untertitel. Keiner der neun Filme hat eine Untertitelspur, die es ermöglicht hätte, wenn schon nicht auditiv, doch wenigstens visuell dem Geschehen zu folgen. Besonders Menschen, die Englisch nicht als Muttersprache sprechen, wie ich, werden daher hier durch den dumpfen Ton gepaart mit einer sehr britischen Aussprache vor eine Herausforderung gestellt.Ich möchte das aber nicht als völlig katastrophal darstellen. Hitchcock ist ein sehr visueller Regisseur und man kann seinen Filmen auch gut nur anhand der Bilder und der Sprachfetzen verstehen, die man tatsächlich versteht. Ich hatte dennoch Freude am Film und denke, dass es anderen auch so gehen sollte.Extras:Es gibt kaum Extras, was ich aber auch nicht wirklich erwartet habe. In den späten 1920ern wurden noch keine Making-ofs und B-Rolls gedreht. Stattdessen gibt es aber eine kurze 3-5-minütige Einführung zu jedem Film von Filmhistoriker und Regisseur Noel Simsolo. Diese sind auf Französisch mit englischen Untertiteln und bieten einen interessanten Einblick in die Entstehug des jeweiligen Films. Zusaätzlich gibt es auch noch einen Test-take aus Blackmail, in dem Hitchcock mit der Hauptdarstellerin scherzt, da sie gerne ihre Stimme im Film hören wollte. Und letztlich gibt ein 52-minütiges, französisches Special mit englischen Untertiteln, in dem Hitchcocks frühe Karriere weiter beleuchtet wird.Ebenfalls ärgerlich ist das 30-sekündige Intro zu jeder DVD, das nicht übersprungen werden kann.Verpackung:Die Box ist handlich und nimmt nicht viel Platz in Anspruch. Die DVDs sind glücklicherweise nicht aufeinander gelegt, wie es so oft in Box-Sets der Fall ist, sondern haben alle einen separaten Platz und verkratzen daher auch nicht. Allerdings geht die Box von alleine auf, weil sie keinen Einrastmechanismus hat. Deshalb ist notwenig, sie immer in den Pappschuber zur Sicherung zu schieben. Das ist aber nur von geringer Bedeutung, denn meiner Meinugn nach ist der Inhalt wichtiger.Fazit:Diese Box bekommt meine vollste Empfehlung. Wer sich mit Hitchcocks rühen Jahren und seine filmischen Ursprungen auseinandersetzen will, kommt hier nicht drum herum. In einer sehr hochwertigen Restaurierung werden hier seine Filme für British International Pictures präsentiert. Lediglich die Ausstattung der Box hätte etwas üppiger sein können, aber glauben Sie mir, ich meckere hier auf enorm hohen Niveau.

Buying this set was a treat as most of them were earlier available in terrible prints.Some of films in the set are important works like blackmail and rich and Strange. However it is a pity they have not included the silent version of Blackmail like was done in the german version. The other important omissions are The finest Hitch silent The Lodger. I would also have liked to see Young and Inocent if for nothing else but the glorious camera movement that ends in a close up of the villians eyes. i hope there is a vol 2 that puts these films out
