couldn't build a house with it BUT
a lot of good info but i can't tell if it's too basic or not. photos in this version copyright 2003 has about 100 black and white photos from i think the 40's through 50's making me question relevance for today, however most appears functional and covers the intro and basics header size above window etc. but no real load calcs or lumber typical strength factors etc. it's like it might be all there but from what i can see no info that lets you design your own house walls buildings etc unless you use their examples, maybe that's considered engineering so maybe i'm talking out my ignorant hole (i'm no carpenter and i accept my ignorance) i think it found a permanent place in my library, for like 100$ ish or whatever i paid for it when i rent property's it's worth it for sure, has drywall, painting, door install, window install, roofing install and repair, flooring some types covered more than others. i think with this book and youtube you could strip a house to the studs and redo but maybe not build from foundation up, but i doubt any book can do that. it's worth it for a hvac tradesman 11yr in my opinion and i would believe very useful to a handy person

The best carpentry book I've ever seen.
I used this book in an adult ed course I took 40 years ago. After 15 classes at night, I built a 3 room addition on my house.I bought this updated copy for my granddaughter's husband as I didn't want to give up my copy as I still use it to refresh my memory when I start a new project.I have never worked in construction, but I could build an entire house with this book!

maybe 3 1/2 stars
I am a builder / carpenter that collects carpentry books for ideas and for the purpose of tryinng to stay current with new techniques. I purchased this book used from an Amazon reseller, and upon receiving it am dissapointed. The book is very out of date and due to its age, is not comparable to newer books in terms of illustrations. I have several books that are significantly better for carpentry / framing. I would not recommend this book.

Understandable and Useful
I recently got the task of designing a decently sized structure. Although I had done carpentry projects for many years, I soon learned there were a lot of practical things about building design I didn't know. This book is the very best I found at our local library to answer the questions I had. I liked it so much I had to order one for my own library. Highly recommended.

Amazing book
I’ve only read the first chapter and gained a wealth of knowledge. I believe you can build a house from the ground up by following along this book

Excellence!
This textbook is easy to understand. One could build a house from the ground-up, if so inclined. I had the book since 1968, but lost it recently; and, as such, I was happy to be able to replace it through AMAZON. Excellent for professionals as well as the handyman. If one wants to just: repair a roof or build a porch: it's all there!
