Trollslayer: Gotrek and Felix: Warhammer Chronicles, Book 1

I have to admit, I'm nostagic, because this was my first fantasy book. It's very simple, the plot is clear: two guys killing monsters. Do not expect anything more and you'll enjoy it.

I've read through book three and this is probably the worst one so far. Its more like a collection of chapter long stories introducing the two main characters and the state of the warhammer world. This is why I took off a star. If that's the only thing that bothers you about this book, you'll enjoy the following ones.That all being said, I love this series. I came into this only having experienced a few warhammer video games, and wanted to know more about what is going on. These books are no fluff, all action and adventure that anyone could pick up.

Loved the detail and interned lore of the world that is explained and expanded on in these novels. I hope someone can help me understand here but, is the "troll" at Karak Eight Peaks a Skaven creation called a hellpit abomination?

I knew nothing of Warhammer and I found this book very enjoyable. The characters have the most entertaining relationship. I am already on book 5 now. Highly recommended for anyone that likes action, and almost like a "buddy cop" vibe.

The book is composed mainly of short stories told with an emphasis for skipping to action. This is a little frustrating at times but only because the short stories are so good that you'll end up not wanting to leave the scenes or the characters you've met along the way. It's a good problem to have as each story is captivatingWorth the pick up in my opinion if you're on the fence and looking for a captivating action packed adventure.

Gotrek and Felix are classic heroes of hack-and-slash fantasy. In the strong tradition of Conan the Barbarian, they trek through rivers of blood, cutting down monsters and supernatural bad guys left and right. Gotrek is a dwarf who committed an unspoken crime and has vowed to seek his death by slaying the foulest of the fell creatures that inhabit the Warhammer universe. Felix is a well-educated, university drop out, who got drunk and swore to accompany Gotrek, chronicling his efforts.This first novel of the series is far from the best. King is still figuring out his characters and as often seems to happen in early Warhammer books, we’re given a series of short stories rather than a full novel. But the heart that makes the series great is already present. Gotrek’s eagerness to end his own pain by finding an evil too great for even his sharp axe constantly runs afoul of his own iron will and unwillingness to concede to any opponent. Felix is far less eager to find his own death, but just can’t bring himself to leave the dwarf behind. It’s not his oath, whatever he pretends, it’s loyalty and friendship and courage beyond all rationality.

I started this book because of several recommendations from friends. I wasn't too sure at first as I thought It really would not be my style, but I must say William King completely had me engrossed in his book the entire time!Excellent read, can't wait to read the next.

William King is an amazing story teller and writer. I'd recommend this series to anyone. Did I mention I bought the entire Gotrek and Felix series for Kindle? ;) Its that good! Get in on the action and get ready for some amazing adventure!

William King is simply one of Black Libraries Finest.Great stories and very strong characters. Gotrek and Felix for the win!

Trollslayer è il primo capitolo della saga di Gotrek & Felix, dove vengono narrate le avventure del nano Gotrek, un trollslayer che, senza paura, si fionda sempre nell'azione, e del suo compagno, Felix, il quale da del suo meglio per sopravvivere.Che dire, personalmente, è stata un'ottima lettura. Le storie narrate mi hanno preso e William King mi sembra un buon autore.Per la lingua, ad eccezione di alcune parole per cui ho dovuto usare il dizionario del Kindle, è di molta facile comprensione, e mi reputo decente in inglese.

If you like warhammer you will like this. It's not complex but it's highly entertaining with Gotrek and Felix being great characters.

Trollslayer ist mein erster Warhammer-Roman, den ich gelesen habe - und es war nicht mein letzter.Leser, die die Welt von Warhammer nicht kennen, seien gewarnt: dieses Buch hat seine Stärken, eindeutig in den Action-Sequenzen, die sehr detailreich beschrieben werden - entsprechend den dazugehörigen Rollen- und Tabletospielen. Unter den Fantasy-Romanen ist es eher der Action-Film als das epische Drama à la Herr der Ringe. Einige Leser mögen daher etwas über die Tatsache stolpern, wie ausführlich das Spalten eines Schädels und sämtlicher Kampfszenen beschrieben werden. Daher gebe ich dem Buch fünf Sterne für Warhammer-Fans und drei Sterne für den Warhammer-Unkundigen.Das Tagebuch-Format hilft, diese Action-Höhepunkte zu unterstreichen. Jedes Kapitel beginnt mit einem kurzen Auszug aus dem Tagebuch von Felix - einem der beiden Hauptcharaktere. So dann taucht der Leser in die Geschichte dieses Kapitels ein. Die einzelnen Kapitel hängen inhaltlich nur lose zusammen, so dass das Buch eher wie eine Ansammlung von Kurzgeschichten anmutet. Nicht nur einmal verlangt es den Leser zu erfahren, wie eine bestimmte Szene ausgeht, nur um dann im nächsten Abschnitt zu entdecken, dass just diese Sequenz übersprungen wurde und in einer kurzen erzählerischen Rückblende abgehandelt wird.Die Hauptfiguren könnten durchaus detailreicher dargestellt sein und ebenso deren Vergangenheit und Vorgeschichten könnten etwas ausführlicher behandelt werden. Immerhin handelt es sich bei "Trollslayer" um den Auftakt einer ganzen Serie. Stattdessen erhält der Leser nur scheibchenweise Informationen darüber, wie sie in die augenblickliche Situation gekommen sind. Immermal wieder wiederholen sich kleinere Abschnitte, als ob jedes Kapitel separat in einem Magazin bereits veröffentlicht wurde und nun in einem Buch zusammengefaßt wurde. Man hat das Gefühl, als wolle der Autor seine Leserschaft auf den gleichen Stand der Dinge bringen bzw. halten.Trotzdem scheint William King in der Fortsetzung dieses Manko gemerkt zu haben und elaboriert dort über die Vergangenheit der beiden Helden und sozialen Geflechten, in denen sich insbesondere Felix befindet, ausführlicher. Der Fokus in diesem Roman liegt eindeutig auf Action, Spannung und Kämpfe und darin versteht sich William King eben sehr gut.Alles in allem ein gelungener Roman, wenn er auch sehr düster und dunkel mit all seinen fantastischen Monstern ist. In seiner unkonventionellen Art wird er auch den Warhammer-Unkundigen Spass machen, ihn zu lesen.
