English: With the desire to improve their lives, the men of Huajuan de Leon emigrate without realizing that they are destroying that which they want to save most, their families. This is the story of Diamantina and Araceli, two young women from the Oaxacan Mixtec who watch their men, Santiago and Macario, leave for the States in search of a better life. Santiago tries to raise money in order to marry Diamantina, whose father abides by the tradition of a marriage dowry. Macario is looking to alleviate his familys poverty. When the men return to the village they try to recover what they had left behind, but things are no longer the same. Spiral is a generational story about patriarchal society, the power of community and family . A love story that explores with beautiful cinematography and complex characters the archaic social and moral codes that still prevail in the small towns of Mexico. <P> Spanish: Intensa historia de amor que refleja la realidad de muchos inmigrantes quienes buscando una mejor vida termina destruyendo lo que ellos mas quieren; sus propias familias. An enticing movie for those who have live a similar life to that of the characters. This film is subtle in plot but manages to retain your attention throughout the movie. It's not an action driven film or have some sort of fancy soundtrack score, just pay really good attention.

A beautiful and well made film.
Magical landscapes and an honest look at the troubling effects of migration on small impoverished towns of Mexico. Don't miss it!

This movie is NOT for children
As an adult and child of immigrants, I can appreciate this movie in many ways. The movie features beautiful scenery and superb acting. I chose to rate this movie the way I did, however, because of a truly GRAPHIC and totally unnecessary scene depicting the slaughter and bleeding out of goats. This scene lends nothing to the film whatsoever and has the actors actively engaged in the slaughter of animals. This movie is without a doubt worth watching and owning but children should not be allowed to view the pointless violence directed at animals in this film.

Espiral
Immigration is the never-ending debate of our times. It always feeds political campaigns for individuals that desperately want to capture the votes of equally desperate people that find it convenient to blame their problems on the immigrants. "Espiral" (Spiral) would be a perfect title for this repetitive and futile cycle, and it happens to be name of this passionate and absorbing film, in which we are presented another angle of this problem, different from the ones that have been previously portrayed in Hollywood."Espiral" tells us a story that can be happening anywhere in our planet, in which people migrate to a different country to find a better future. In this case, the story takes place in a small rural town in Mexico. It all begins when Santiago (Harold Torres) wants to marry Diamantina (Lazua Larios). However, as tradition in small towns dictates, Santiago has to ask Taurino (Gabriel Pascual), Diamantina's father, for his blessing. Taurino, who is unhappy because he never had a son, wants to make sure that he gets some type of retribution for giving his daughter away. For this purpose, he approves the wedding, but with the condition that Santiago has to get some money for Taurino, with the excuse that it will be used to support his wife-to-be. This forces Gonzalo to travel to the United States to work and save some money, which is precisely what he does, together with his friend Macario (Eduardo Santander). As you may probably tell, many things will happen in the little town while Gonzalo and Macario are gone.Contrary to most other movies about immigration, in which we witness the plight of the immigrants during their crossing or after their arrival to the United States, "Espiral" deals with what happens to the people left behind.. It is powerful and dramatic, and it happens on a daily basis. Director Jorge Pérez Solano captures life in a small town in great detail, aided by César Gutierrez Miranda's awesome cinematography.
