The Eloquent Screen
The Eloquent Screen by Gilberto Perez is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late July. The philosophy within a film's monologues and dialogues, recurrent themes and tropes, usage of heroes and villains, happy/bittersweet/tragic endings, symbolism, realism of war and combat onscreen, and actual filmmaking (i.e. use of editing, vertical split-screens, impossible angles, and perspectives to make a cinematic impression). It goes in about neck-deep (with my particular preference being western films), so it’s not completely overwhelming, but you do have to pore over things a fair amount to get the greater point.
