I'd say go smaller. I was right in between M and L and went with the M which fits perfectly.

ASO ankle braces are made for either foot. There are no left or right. Thanks

Can you fit this into a shoe?

Yes, very easily. Even with strapping it fits into a shoe. The only exception is if the shoe is very snug before brace then it would be a really tight fit. I wear my own in tennis shoes with no issue.
