It takes a little practice, some pits are larger then the hole, but not very many. Just flip it over and pop the pit out if it doesn’t push though. After I used it a few times I discovered if you line up the punch with the stem end of the cherry of course taking the stem off first, the pit will come out 99% of the time. I use a stainless steel bowl so I can hear the pit drop. Im glad I bought this one. I thought about buying the one that has a area to put a bunch of cherries and feed them into the pitter, but after discovering that it works best to put the punch through the stem end you would have no control over where the cherry is punched and then you would have a bunch of cherries with the pit still in them. I’m very happy with my cherry pitter.

Decent job, way better than by hand
I've never used a cherry pitter before, but I had a large amount of tart cherries to pit for a recipe. This pitter did a good job and I definitely couldn't have done it as well with just a knife. I'd say 80% of the time it was perfect and the pits just popped out. 15% the pits were hanging by a thread, and 5% they were dislodged but still inside the cherry.I did get tiny cherry splatters on my backsplash and windowsill despite using it in the sink. The color I received was not red like in the picture, but more purple, like a raspberry color

For as much use as I got out of this device, for SO litle money ... it has been a very GREAT good deal!
I bought this device in June of 2013. It is now, at the time of this writing, July of 2016.And my unit just broke ... the metal piece, the spike that pushes the pit out of the cherry broke off COMPLETELY ...THIRTEEN dollars and it ONLY lasted three years of extremely exhaustive use.Cherries are one of my favorite things in the world. I could live off of a diet of cherries. But I was always SO put off by having to spit something out of my mouth every time I ate one. Uncouth, and COMPLETELY unsanitary to my eye. So when I found this device I was delighted. I could now eat cherries to my hearts content and not have to deal with "WHAT TO DO WITH THIS CHERRY PIT IN MY MOUTH" ...But how i've got this huge complaint. The little metal spike that pushes the pit out of the cherry broke off ... after ONLY three years of CONTINUOUS use. Doesn't ANYBODY make ANYTHING of ANY kind of quality now-a-days? This is just unconscionable that I should spend my hard earned cash, what little there is of it, on a piece of kitchen equipment that should get so much use, and then fail after so little time.,,,OK, OK ... before anybody gets mad ... this was something of a joke ... my attempt at being funny ... it never seems to work ... my apologies. I actually feel as though three years of such EXTENSIVE use (considering my LOVE of cherries ... i'd be willing to bet that I eat a 2 - 2.5 lb bag of cherries every week ... or maybe every two weeks), for a paltry $13, to be an extravagantly GOOD DEALI've glued the spike (along with the mounting plate behind it that broke off with the spike) back to the upper handle with a bit of epoxy ... it now works us XSXwe'll see how that goes for a couple of weeks or months, and I'll let you know how THAT goes.It arrived quickly, NO customer service was required, and it lasted three solid years under of exhaustive use for a very modest price. A very good deal in anyone's view to my eye. And yes, I wood recommend this product. The only reason it did not get five stars was that it DID actually break.

Useful Gadgets
I use the avocado slicer for sushi making. During Cherry season, this pit pusher is a hit!

Nice little sturdy tool.
Beware- this is a little messier (drips juices) than it shows in the pictures, so make sure you use it over a paper towel or dish. It seems sturdy and durable. It has a nice spring action too. I hand washed it so I don't know if it will handle a dishwasher. After receiving this (within 2 days!) I washed it to try it and it didn't work on the the very first cherry I tried, but it was fine with the other 5 cherries. One pit seemed to get stuck in the cup, so I took it apart (easy) to push the pit out. Another pit seemed stuck too so I just put in another cherry and pushed both pits through at once. It worked. My daughter came home from work and I showed it to her and then she proceeded to eat some cherries with just using her mouth instead, and didn't have any drippy juices. I guess I may have wasted my money. Oh well, it does what it's advertised to do, you can use it to pit enough cherries (one by one) for a recipe, you can avoid spitting pits and maybe stained fingers, and it's cute. On the other hand, you have a little more to clean up and a new gadget to find a home for. Your choice I guess. Good luck.

Pits get stuck
For the most part, I like it. Sturdy product, easy to use, cleans easily. My only complaint is that the hole could be bigger. Some pits get stuck and have to be tapped out.

It works!
I bought this cherry pitter because my loved one has a medical issue that prevents her from managing the pit in the mouth safely, and she loves cherries. I did not try to pit olives, although the packaging claims it does. The device is well made, and fits a medium sized hand quite well, not requiring a lot of force to operate. The device operates like a hand held stapler, with the fulcrum at one end, for leverage. It measures 5.5 in. in length, 6 in. with the locking stem pulled out. The business end comprises a cherry seat, and a 1.5 in. prong, both metal, as is the hinge pin at the other end. Imbedded in the device is the V shaped metal linear spring that exerts the tension to open the device for use.The translucent guard does contain the juice spatter, directing it in a downward direction. It is best done in a kitchen sink over a metal pan.The device pits the cherry successfully at least 95% of the time, having less success if the cherry is not firm. It works remarkably well, but it is wise to visualize the extruded pit and hear the ping as it hits the metal pan , in case a pit is missed in the process.A quick rinse under the tap cleans this device easily.

Perfect - for Cherries
This is a perfect product that one has come to expect for Oxo brand. It does cherries very efficently. Ripe ones a little less so. It does not really do Kalamata olives that good, but good enough to get the pits out, you have to pull the remaining part by hand. Defintinly would reccommend though, makes baking cherry desserts way more doable.

A specialist tool that does a brilliant job
This is one of those tools that do a very specific job and do it brilliantly. My family adore cherry pies but I hated getting the stones out so much that I often resorted to buying ready made pie filling. However, after coming across this tool I now wonder how I ever managed without it.Like all tools from Oxo good grips this is well made, feeling sturdy but at the same time lightweight. It is well balanaced and easy to hold in one and use with one hand.It couldn't be simpler to use; all you do is pop a cherry (or olive) into the section as shown in the photograph and use your hand to depress the arm. This action causes the metal spike to go through the cherry and forces the stone out of the base. The stone falls out of the bottom of the tool and you are left with an intact cherry with just a small hole where the stone came out.The splatterguard does help stop most of the mess although there can be a few splatters still just under the area where you are working - it is a good idea to have a container or plate below just to catch the few drips that do escape. It is easy to clean, just give it a quick swill in hot soapy water. It takes up very little storage space in a kitchen drawer. If you find yourself having to prepare cherries or olives this is a tool well worth the investment.

Surprisingly good and consistent
I don't pit cherries too often but I have first hand seen how tedious it is to pit cherries by hand. One day my partner needed help pitting a few kgs of cherries and so with no prior experience I set off with this cherry pitter. I will say this thing is fantastic. Despite never having used one before it was quick to use and gave very consistent results without shredding up the cherries or removing pieces of the cherry flesh along with the pit. My partner also gave me a great tip which is that always have the stem side facing down while pressing the pit extractor through the bottom of the cherry, that way the pit can exit the area where the stem used to be and you also remove minimal cherry flesh with your pit. Overall though, great tool, makes processing cherries (and I imagine other small stone fruits) easy.
