Les visiteurs du soir (Criterion Collection)

Just gorgeous. Loved this movie. The black and white was dazzling, story somewhat predictable, but a pleasure, and the acting fine, although Arletty's acting style seemed identical to her protaginist in "Children of Paradise" (a later Carne film). The young Cuny instantly recognizable (see "la Dolce Vita" and "Satyricon"). I'm so happy that Jean Marais did not get the Gilles character part; I do not like his acting when he has a romantic scene with a woman. He plays to the camera or audience not the woman (see "Beauty and the Beast"). I liked the stark castle interiors and the courtyard shots. The devil quite lively and what a dandy. Amazing what the production crew was able to accomplish. Yes, I also was able to pick the director Resnais out of the extras provided for the banquet scene. Haven't picked out Simone Signoret yet.

This French film starring Arletty was one of the highlights of her career. It is a humorous film with a twist on an ending...

Was delighted to find this finally available. This film was made under the noses of the Nazis, during the German occupation. Well worth adding to your collection if you love French films.

Human love is a positive thing although it can also generate some real negatives as well: jealousy, revenge, corrupted aspirations - all shown here.

The Carne-Prevert pattern of Quai des Brumes translates here into fantasy, reminiscent of La Belle et la Bete, which is not completely successful. It lacks the superb performances of the earlier films, and those of the forthcoming "Les Enfants du Paradis" and its leisurely rhythms fail to engage the attention adequately. But it is an essential element of French twentieth century cinema and of European history of the time.

The Criterion Collection specializes in classic films that are very hard to find. La Belle Et La Bete was the first one I purchased, and now, Les Visiteur Du Soir, a French film that pre-dated La Belle Et La Bete, and is just as sumptuous and entertaining. It's also harder than hen's teeth to locate before Criterion released it. As a student of the French language, and as a film enthusiast, I can highly recommend it.

If you like the Cocteau fantasy's this will float your boat. I was never into the "French new wave" but the fantasy's are great.

I enjoyed this movie with its mysterious aura. One gets caught up in the intrigue of the action and the characters.

Un film boiteux comme un certain diable...une image superbe, de jolies trouvailles de mise en scène comme le ralenti, le morphing ou le bassin-écran, quelques instants de grâce et des séquences carrément cucul avec une distribution inégale. Alain Cuny, ménestrel granitique, joue comme un jambon. Arletty, androgyne, hiératique, érotique, est excellente et ambiguë, comme souvent, comme dans sa vie d'alors... Marie Déa, angélique pucelle, est une bien jolie châtelaine ignorant la honte et le péché, bravant la morale traditionnelle. Berry, satanique en justaucorps, trouve un de ses cabotinages les plus aboutis ("Je suis le diâââble") tandis que le solide Fernand Ledoux et Marcel Herrand-le-méchant-balafré (futur Lacenaire, inoubliable figure !) assurent en rivaux malheureux. Tourné en zone nono (studios de la Victorine), le film sortit en décembre 1942 au plus fort d'un hiver de privations en pleine occupation nazie. La fin (entre Eurydice et femme de Loth) fut interprétée comme une métaphore de la Résistance. Voire...

Ik vond het niet leuk dat ik een advertentie krijg toegestuurd over een BluRay-disc die niet bruikbaar is in de Europese Regio. De informatie is niet duidelijk bij de aanbieding. Ergo, er staat niets. Ik koop vaker van de Criterion-Collection en ik heb nooit problemen gehad. Waarom stuur je een advertentie als je weet dat het niet werkt in Europa.

Ce film de Prévert/Carné tourné dans la tourmente de la Deuxième guerre mondiale en 1943 dans la France occupée se présente comme une fable sur la rédemption par l'amour d'un troubadour pour une châtelaine. Film très puissant et évocateur, d'une poésie inaltérable qui en fait un des plus grand film du XXe siècle. Je ne peux que recommander ce film animé par de très grands artistes comme Alain Cuny ou Fernand Ledoux. Reconstitution du film remarquable. Ce film est à la fois daté et merveilleusement universel ( cf les enfants du Paradis.), donc transférable par la poésie la profondeur et surtout l ambivalence des héros. Quoique baignant dans une ironie douce plutôt agnostique, rien moins que le Bien le Mal l amour qui se meuvent en délicate insécurité. L envers du nihilisme déconstructeur des média et intellectuels actuels. Tout cela filmé sous l'Occupation. On peut faire du beau et du bon partout toujours , Il n existe de 'dominés' que pour les soumis et les pseudos sociologues. L esprit libre est invincible.
