Bigger than life adventures, and all true!
A bucket list book, how glad I was to find this (surprise, inscribed) copy. The images and events related by Jay Hammond startle and delight and pump all adrenal glands - all at once. For me, this autobiography resonates a good bit of human experience's design - one person whose chosen lifestyle and (I think) vision afforded so many opportunities to see, weigh in, and make a big difference in many lives. His engaging writings carry readers through hazards and blessings in arenas political and arctic, interactions with natural wonders and unstoppable forces of wilderness; and in big business deals dramatic or mundane, somehow, each hilarity and each somber moment becomes something we think - had circumstances and paradigms shifted slightly - could also give us that same journey's end smile.

Reading about family is always wonderful. Jay Hammond was my Father's cousin
Reading about family is always wonderful. Jay Hammond was my Father's cousin, and early parts of the book reflect on family members I once met. Jay was someone my father always spoke about in glowing terms. Having never met Jay, this was a special treat for me to read this book, and to learn about plane crashes and WWII, and my family's part in that battle.

Story
The life of the most wonderful governor of Alaska! What a marvelous man with heart, courage & foresight. Wish he had written many more books as he is a story teller of the highest caliber. A "must" read!

An interesting man during an interesting time in Alaska's history
I just finished this biography and really enjoyed it. I knew who Jay Hammond was since his name pops up in almost every Alaska book I read. What I didn't know is that he had a great sense of humor and must have been a hoot as a friend and neighbor.I enjoyed reading about his childhood, his Air Force service during WWII, his marriage(s) and kids, and the many jobs he had on his way to Governor. I do wish he had talked more about his experiences building his cabin and fishing, hunting, trapping and being outdoors. The political stuff took over half of the book, and got a little boring in parts. But, I did enjoy the whole book and was glad for the index in the back so I could go back and re-read parts. I learned quite a bit about the fight between factions over the oil pipeline and homesteading and native issues. He was a nice mix between conservative and liberal, conservationist and developer, although those qualities meant some portion of the populace was mad at him at any given time.

What a man.
This books brings together many of the most interesting facts (and maybe some fictions) about the former governor of Alaska.
