Quite easy to install
I have a 9' high ceiling in my garage and I am 6' - 1", so when fully hauled I have about 2" clearance between the hull of kayak and the top of my head. If your ceiling is lower than 9' and you want to be able to walk below the kayak you may have a problem. Installation was pretty straightforward if you take your time and look at the pictures - I was confused for a minute or so until I realized I was viewing the installation from the other side than the illustration. There was actually no instruction on operating the hoist in my package but I worked out how the mechanism worked pretty fast. I was a little concerned that the hook at the far end from the wall cleat was sticking but then realized I had a crossed rope. I am an engineer, so it was pretty straightforward to debug but I could see less technical people might benefit from some clearer instructions. Otherwise it appears a very sturdy set up and I think it should last. I would definitely find a beam and not trust the toggle bolts supplied - they might be strong enough but I would be doubtful the drywall would be equally strong. One little hint on finding beams with a stud finder on textured ceilings I found on the internet when working on this project is to slide the instrument over a piece of card which seems to iron out the false readings you appear to get sliding it on textured surfaces.

A step-up to better quality
I already had a kayak hoist. We bought a second kayak which is what this purchase was all about. This set is MUCH better than our first set. The lift rope is much thicker, the hardware is all high quality. The rope stays on the wheels and doesn't slip off. The heavy duty hooks at the end of the rope have a soft covering that won't slip off either. We don't use the straps that are supposed to wrap around the kayak because that would let the kayak hang too low as our garage ceiling isn't too high. We just hook directly onto the kayak.I highly recommend this lift system because the materials are top-notch.

Skimped on hardware quality
I purchased this brand instead of others because of the reviews and that the item appeared much sturdier than others. Well, like the other brands sold and reviewed on Amazon the lag screws and rope are of inferior quality. The lug screw heads broke off almost immediately while installing and the rope will definitely need to be replaced after a few uses. It boggles the mind why any company would forgo spending an additional $5 for higher quality hardware. In my experience and in reading product reviews this seems to be a wide spread problem across almost all product lines sold on Amazon unless buying Name Brand. The product itself seems to work fine so far, its just frustrating that one has to go out of the way to travel to a hardware store to replace installation hardware for brand new out of box item.

Great brackets, FLIMSY rope.
I’d really like to give this more stars because I like the metal bracket and pulley system. I am hanging a 14 foot 85 pound tandem kayak From my garage ceiling. It’s mounted under common walking area and a workbench. Upon lifting the kayak up, it takes great effort to lift, plus the strain on the ropes is incredible. It looks like they would Frey and snap. There is no way I am relying upon my life and my families life to ever walk under this harness. Therefore I had to order 5/16” paracord with a high tensile strength for safety. I am also putting extra J hooks in the ceiling with a safety strap wrapped around once the kayak is in the air. Might seem like overkill, but that’s how much I don’t trust these flimsy ropes that come with the unit.

Good Value for the price
Works well in my space. I replaced the hooks that hold the kayak straps so that I could use my own straps and get some extra clearance, because the ceiling is low, so I cant comment on the quality of the hooks or straps. The rope that comes with it is cheap and frays/stretches easily, so expect to replace the rope if you're bringing the kayak up and down frequently. Otherwise very well-built, relatively easy to install, easy to use, and I'm not at all worried about it coming down.

Not very clear direction
I ordered 2 of these kayak hoists to hang our 10’ kayaks off our garage ceiling. The directions were not very clear, however figuring out how to hang them was fairly easy. The screws that came with the brackets needed a fat philips bit which are hard to come by so we used long screws we had at home.Once we had them hung, it was easy to put the straps under the kayaks and hoist them up. They seem very sturdy and strong at this point. I would caution keeping an eye on the black hoist ropes as they seem like they would fray easily over time.

Quality, easy to use and install product.
Love the product. I use this to hang my fishing kayak in my garage. Very simple, easy to use design. Easy to install and well made too. Seems like it’ll lift a good amount of weight in a boat too. Definitely recommend it if you need more space by suspending your boat indoors.

Great product for tight spaces.
This setup works well. I was able to install on the ceiling next to wall. It pulls the kayak to the wall, out of the way. Install was tough, as securing into the overhead was challenge finding studs.
