The Revised Common Lectionary: Episcopal Edition

Sunday Readings up to Date
Books of Sunday Scripture Readigns are not new. Nor is the Revised Common Lectionary. But updates are always being made. This edition of the Revised Common Lectionary comes in a handy size (it could fit into a pew rack). The best thing about this volume is its inclusion of an alternate set of Old Testament Readings for the Season after Pentecost. Year A includes the stories of the Patriarchs. Year B tells us about the kings of Israel all the way to the Babylonian Captivity. And Year C introduces us to the prophets, chronologically. I see in these Readings an honest attempt to follow the Sunday theme from the Holy Gospel. My only problem with the Episcopal (and ELCA) Readings is in its exclusion of any reference to Ephesians 5: 21-33 in Series B when this Epistle is being read from Sunday to Sunday. This Reading is also excluded from the Marriage Rite in the Pastoral Care resources. I understand the problems that have emerged from the words "wives, submit to your husbands;" but there is a way to preach this Reading without setting husbands up to become abusers. In reality, I often find myself giving myself up for my wife, since I love her (as St Paul also taught).

Good Quality
Good Quality paper and binding. Very happy with the book.

Onion skin pages.
The page numbers match the ones in the pews which is nice. I do like to make notes when I read and study and the pages are onion skin thickness which makes it a challenge to use. I am always afraid I am going to tear a page.

Nicely Printed
Decent sized print and nicely bound. Definitely a must have if you are a lector and/or lay minister. Yes, you can look up the readings on line and print them, but having the book in hand and also a quick reference is more than convenient.

Not good for chapel/lectern copy
Purchased this to be a chapel lectionary. The binding is stiff and the book will not lay open on the lectern. The print size is fine. Overall, it's a fine little lectionary, it just doesn't check all the boxes of what we were hoping for and expecting.

Poorly bound; too stiff to lie open for use
This is a poorly bound book. It's a tool for preparing liturgy and sermons and it is almost impossible to lie open. It is very stiff and feels cheaply put together. Also, be advised that when a reading is used in more than one year (ABC) the reading is only printed once and requires flipping to its first occurrence in the lectionary, thus mitigating the value of having all the day's reading in one place in the book. This is ALMOST the tool I would like to use. I had a three volume spiral bound version years ago which was much more convenient. If this were bound in the way most hard cover Bibles are it would be much more useful.

NRSV Readings for Sundays of years A, B and C.
Book came promptly. Well packed. It's solid, well bound. Disappointed about the lack of ribbons as page markers, but gives me another book to use the many book marks I have in. It's simply the lectionary readings for Sundays Years, A, B and C in NRSV standard. The text is readable in even poor light, which can be a problem sometimes in our older church if the lighting isn't at it's best.It will get good use with me.
