The Mamuthones mask is one of the most ancient in Sardinia. It's form represents the (cum granum salis) the hard life of the shepherds of the Barbagia region. During the carnival season men and boys put on these masks and dance through the streets of the town of Mamoiada, bearing dozens of bells on their backs and swinging bull whips with which the bystanders are tried to be taken captive. All this naturally happens with a lot of noise and cheering of the locals.
