Q: so how does it work? Is the boom hollow so the line goes through it? Or how does it attach to the main line?

The boom is hollow. Thread your mainline through the end with the clip on. I then thread the line through a bead and attach a small swivel clip to the line. (The bead protects your knot. I use a palomar knot but any knot that you have confidence in will do just as well.) Then attach your hook length to the swivel clip.Attach your feeder or lead to the clip on the boom, and off you go. I have found these to be really useful. I mainly use it with a blockend (maggot) feeder, but you could use a cage feeder or just a straight lead. The boom kicks the hook length out away from the feeder or lead, and I find it has almost totally eliminated tangles. And it saves having to break everything down to change feeders. I do quite a lot of feeder fishing and I wouldn't be without these little gizmos. And at the price, it's a steal. Stick with it, they work a treat.
