A Search for Gold Treasure
I used this product for my own self entertainment. My evaluation of this movie is that it was a great western adventure story about a conflict between two close friends both wanting to discover the location of a secret canyon entrance to a wall of gold.

Good film with great actors
Mackenna's Gold is an interesting film as well as exciting one to watch. I viewed the film many years ago and its essential elements are as engrossing today as they were then, and maybe more so. Yes, it is a western with cowboys and Indians. However, its focus is on a group of individuals and their desire to find gold reported to be in massive amounts in mountains deemed sacred by the Apache. However, its location was unknown by everyone except for Mackenna who once acquired a map. Mackenna was forced to lead the team to the gold even though all of his attempts at convincing the others that there was no gold failed. Their hopes for gold -- and lots of it -- were magnified by the testimony of a blind man who witness the gold for himself years earlier but paid the price with the loss of his eyes for invading a sacred site. They do eventually locate the gold, but the problems they subsequently encountered were more than a typical human could handle. Mackenna was the only one of the three survivors to leave with gold in his possession.

WIDESCREEN ALERT!!!
You would think the single version of this movie would be in it's original widescreen format. But appaently the widescreen version of this movie is very hard to come by. After much research and reading lots of reviews, I found the widescreen version of Mackenna's Gold on a 2 disc, four movie collection sold here on Amazon. There are some single double-sided flip discs out there which are very rare that have the fullscreen on one side and widescreen on the other. After I bought the four movie collection with Mackenna's Gold on it, about a week later I happened to stumble upon one of those rare double-sided flip discs with both versions! It was used but in "Very Good" condition so I immediately ordered it as well! They played this movie repeatedly when I was a kid and I love it so much that I wanted to have an extra copy. Oh sure, it's hokey and you can tell some scenes are fake . But c'mon, consider it was made in the late 60's before all the new technology and CGI. The western scenery is FANTASTIC and this movie should really be seen in widescreen to fully apprectiate it.For me, one of the best things about this movie is the opening theme song, "Old Turkey Buzzard" by Jose Feliciano. It is a FANTASTIC western theme song and highly addictive! At least to me. I hope I've helped anyone who might be searching as I was for the WIDESCREEN version.

Nicely spun tale. Lots fo twists & turns for late 60s western yarn.
Prime Antagonists played by Gregory Peck (the Good) & Omar Sharif (the Bad) & Telly Savalas (the Ugly). A couple of 60s/70s nicely staged female actors soften the set, and a host of native American players I recognize but could not name, along with a long list of faces who must have needed work so filled in at least 20 bit parts. The story line played out sort of convoluted. Idea is there is a hidden valley (somewhere in locale of Monument valley?) that contains massive outcroppings of gold. As long as the Apache Tribe keeps the location a secret, their strength will remain. Many have sought it and failed. McKenna has wearied of the trouble all the speculation has caused and crossed guns with Colorado...but he shows up again and forces McKenna to aid him in a final search for the so called valley of Gold. Scenery is awesome; action plays nicely, the actors play out the SCRIPT which is a bit thin, but they make it work. There's plenty of twists & turns to this tale, so it is an interesting film in it's way. Some typical gratuitous dead bodies (seen worse) no blood & guts. I give this movie a 4 cuz I can't do 3.5. Best to view with a good dose of "Suspension of Disbelief" on your own part. I really enjoyed Gregory Peck & Omar Sharif's dialogue in this, pay attention, but sit back and take this in, it really isn't a terrible ride...just fun.02birdog

Awesome Western
Gregory Peck as a lawman in the wild west exemplifies his acting abilities and skills in more than one genre. Mr Peck was definitely one of the best, most underrated actors to have graced the silver screen. MacKenna's Gold is definitely a classic bit of celluloid!

One of my favorite all time
I first saw this and Apache Moon in the Theater as a double feature and loved both.

Decent Movie with poor DVD transfer
This is a decent movie, not necessarily a Western Classic. However, the DVD is of poor quality. It says "Widescreen" but it is not. The print quality is passable. There is no way to turn off the English subtitles which is very distracting and annoying.

Gregory Peck fan!!
I had seen this film in bits on regular TV and decided to chase it on Prime. Glad I did, it’s one of Gregory’s westerns that stands out for the location, co-stars and plot. Very enjoyable, worth the time if you like quality westerns.
