The Spectator is a weekly delight for anyone who loves good writing, contentious opinion and hard-hitting comment. With the finest writing on current affairs, politics, the arts, books and life, you'll read regular columnists who delight, provoke and amuse and editorial features of incredible breadth and depth. Established in 1828, The Spectator is the oldest continuously published magazine in the English language. Its taste for controversy, however, remains undiminished. There is no party line to which its writers are bound – originality of thought and elegance of expression are the sole editorial constraints. The result, week after week, is that Britain’s best columnists, critics and cartoonists turn out their finest work for the magazine and give you their views unfiltered and at cask strength. The Kindle Edition of The Spectator contains most articles found in the print edition, but will not include images or cartoons. For your convenience, issues are auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle at the same time the print edition hits the newsstand.

The best general interest paper in the world for the thinking reader.
This 190-year-old British weekly journal carries news, editorial, cultural reviews, sports and cartoons. It has a conservative (small "c") philosophical outlook. Above all it is written in elegant English and every week there are essays about current matters of interest to the thinking and intelligent reader. Beware: it does not bend the knee to the fad of political correctness, yet is not offensive - oh, yes, there are one or two contributors who can raise the temperature, but that is due to the generalised failure of a sense of humour and understanding of irony. In short, it is a civilised and well-mannered magazine and always carries stimulating and thought-provoking articles. I've been a regular reader for well over 35 years, and could not manage without my weekly fix!

Excellent writing but a trifle right-wing
What I have always loved about the Spectator is the superb writing by so many gifted and entertaining journalists. This continues. I cannot hold it against them that they once had Boris Johnson as their editor; he was a good editor - possibly a lot better at that than as PM. The film reviews and the explorations of words and their meanings are especially good. One cannot but benefit from the social advice given by Mary. Perhaps the most useful articles are the book reviews and I have bought hundreds of books based on Spectator recommendations. May it continue for another 250 years!

Is it available on the Kindle Paperwhite?
As a long time reader of this excellent magazine, I was delighted to find that an electronic version was available from Amazon. It is beautifully presented in all its technicolour on both the iPad and Kindle Fire. I was a bit disappointed that it does not seem to appear on my Kindle Paperwhite. Strangely enough, the magazine appears on the Kindle Store on the Paperwhite, but I subscribed on through the internet on my iPad.

It's the Speccie - what's to know!
Easily the UK's best written magazine of current affairs. Never fails to delight.

The Spectator's wide range of coverage and commentary.
I would give it 5 stars if I could also read it on my Mac. Unfortunately the Kindle Library on my Mac shows only books and not The Spectator.

News from across The Pond.
I subscribed when Brexit was in full swing. I stayed when I became aware of the good writing in the magazine, something sorely lacking in the US news media. For around $12/month, you won't be insulted when you read the commentary. You may not agree with what is being written, but you will have met the writer and understand his position. And they regularly write about the US.

a great magazine
Whether you agree with everything or not, The Spectator presents thoughtful, entertaining, and interesting commentary on the world, politics, art and culture around the world. The Spectator and The New Yorker are my two favorite magazines, even if on the different ends of the spectrum on occasion.

Eclectic
Arguably the oldest, and certainly one of the most eclectic, magazines on the market—with everything from politics to horse racing and bridge (with the first of these as the core). Focus is largely—maybe even almost exclusively on Britain—but if you have a reasonable background in British politics and society (including the “quirkiness” of the latter) it is extremely entertaining.

Overall I love it but resent the space wasted on chess, bridge, poetry and all that., Economist a far superior publication. Neil Murphy

Not so unbiased these days
I'd been a subscriber to The Spectator for a number of years and enjoyed the different views offered weekly by the contributors. Some made me mad, some offered new views, some I completely agreed with. A good all-rounder. But... since around May of 2020, it started to take a left turn instead of staying on the straight and narrow. A few months later it had veered even more to the left. Give it a year and it will be be fully 'woke'. Shame. Cancelled subscription in January '21 (with a heavy heart).

Kann ich niemandem empfehlen
außer vielleicht in Sachen britischer Humor.
