Q: Why are there artificial sweeteners?

Not being the manufacturer, I don’t know. I would prefer it if they did not use them. Of more concern to me, though, is that as well as the sweetener sucralose, they are also using sorbitol, though as a humectant (preserving moisture) rather than a sweetener. Surely we are still consuming it though?

There is no equivalent. SiS (or any other sports electrolyte formula) restore the electrolyte balance in your body. When you sweat you are losing more than just water, you are also losing 'salts' (big simplification!). Just drinking plain water during sport does not rehydrate you properly, which is why people add products such as this. In fact if you start to consume large volumes of water you will make the situation worse and could end up with a condition called Hyponatremia (low sodium concentration in the blood). Bottom line if you are doing exercise which causes you to sweat then re-hydrate properly using an electrolyte supplement added to water...
