A very good book for those who are new to teaching profession. Gives an overview of all main aspects in teaching speaking. As for the survice- I love Amazon, the book arrived new, earlier than it was supposed.

I have a doctorate in the humanities and extensive media experience, but no prior applied linguistics background.I am using this to develop my approach at an in-service, English Teacher training program in Korea. My courses focus on speaking, which is incredibly elusive in many ways. Most of the major, overview-style methodology books are not very helpful in developing practical classroom approaches for speaking. And speaking is traditionally one of the weakest areas of English, in Korea (and I suspect many EFL settings).The book is quite efficient, focused, well-written, and easy to understand.I made the mistake of diving into a lot of methodology books, which I think are meant for degree programs, to establish a historical/contextual background of the field. These books don't offer a lot of potential for development for the teacher, in the near-term. On the other hand, there are plenty of manuals and books that are filled with games and activities. I found this to be equally unsatisfying in terms of pedagogical relevance: I could do a short game to drill vocab, etc, but it would seem disconnected from the "meaningful" classroom tasks.This book was an excellent middle ground, drawing and introducing a broad spectrum of methodical approaches and theoretical considerations for speaking instruction. But it applies all of these things directly to the needs of the classroom teacher. Additionally, there are many activities and tasks (but this is not the main function of the book).If you teach English speaking, get it. It's a library reference.

El libro es un recurso bastante bueno para encontrar maneras de integrar la práctica de speaking en clase. Tiene un sustento teórico muy adecuado y muchos ejemplos prácticos e ideas para implementar en clase.

I must admit, I bought this book many years ago, and still haven't read it! But I've read his "Practice of English Language Teaching" book, which takes a thorough and global approach. I'm sure that the books in this series are just as practical and comprehensive.

Great purchase. Contains useful and practical ideas on how to tackle a speaking lesson, plus a very complete analysis of what a speakers know
