Is the black cover plastic or metal? (the black cover kit is cheaper and i need black, i know the brass and nickel are metal.)

the cover is metal and the inserts for the cord to pass through are rubber.

How do you open the cover? We have tried to pry open with a screw driver - plate won't budge.

First, before installing the cover, I got the cover opened by forcing it with a screwdriver under the cover by pounding it on a flat surface. Tried to work the spring loaded pins a few times but it was still hard to open. So I removed the spring and the 2 pins. I’ll just let gravity close it. I believe I shouldn’t have to use a tool to open it anytime I want. What are you thoughts?

Can you old work this into an existing 3/4" hardwood floor?

Yes, it's exactly what I did. I cut through my Oak flooring, right on the lines from the template provided with the outlet box, but because my jigsaw blade canted in slightly, the hole was too tight for the box to slide in easily.
