A Military Modern History of Modern South Africa
A Military Modern History of Modern South Africa is a brilliantly written piece with a wealth of primary and secondary sources. The author introduces the concept of South African 'Wars of Unification' as a term of reference for possible future studies of the wars of 20th century South Africa. This is a novel idea in terms of the study of the formation and history of South Africa. The book gives a broad background on the political, economic and military situation of South Africa at the turn of the 20th century and proceeds to discuss the Anglo-Boer War, the formation of the Union, UDF, and the First and Second World Wars with specific reference to South Africa's role and involvement and the impact of those conflicts within South Africa. The piece balances national and international perspectives and in the later chapters brings together the divergent threads of the military history of the 'Bush War' and that of the South African Resistance Movements in what could perhaps best be described as novel, fair and fresh. The work concludes with a discussion on the formation and integration of the SANDF. The book places the military history in perspective by giving it context through analysis and discussion on the political events which shaped South Africa.

Boring
Nobody's fault the writer is boring. Does not give orders of battle. Disappointing.

Three Stars
A rather unsatisfactory book. Covered a lot of ground in superficial quasi-academic way.
