It’s hard to overstate the importance of tactics to chess improvement. Studying them seems to be at the top of nearly everyone’s list of best ways to improve your game. I’ve been working through numerous problems in different formats, and I have seen improvement in my calculation, visualization, and pattern-recognition skills, so while I’m nowhere near a GM, my experience seems in line with the consensus.Carsten Hansen’s Chess Tactics - Vol. 1 is an excellent collection of problems, and the author has taken care to organize them and present them so that the reader can get the most out of each exercise. He provides not only answers, but also analyzes alternative lines that could arise from the position. These problems are not for beginners and will prove challenging even for many experienced players, but if you already have tactical chops and wish to sharpen them, you’d likely benefit from studying this book.

The author has done an amazing job of collecting 400 problems, where you can test and improve your tactical chess understanding. This is an action-packed nugget of chess gold for those who want to improve their game (don't we all?).The puzzles are well presented and all from practical play. They are by no means easy, and some are downright nasty. In any case, they are certain to improve your tactical skills if you are willing to put in the hard work. Even if you just want to be entertained, the puzzles will certainly improve your tactical eye. This is a great book!Throughout the book, I had the feeling that the positions could have appeared in my own games. The solution is often not clear-cut; it's much more than just finding the winning move. I really like that there is no apparent theme, so you don't know what to look for in particular.I wish I had read chess books like this one many years ago. Looking forward to more puzzles from Carsten Hansen!To the author: Please put the rating of the problems and the hints far below the puzzles, so it is optional information in the coming volumes.

Practical examples of chess tactics

Very comprehensive book! There is a lifetime of education between the covers of this book. I have to only give it three stars for a MAJOR SHORTCOMING: the print! There is too much packed into one book. The diagrams are so small and blurry that anyone will need a magnifying glass just to read them. I like to read thru and solve without setting up a physical chess set to study. This may not allow you to solve in that way. You will need a magnifying glass and a chess set to work thru these with out “bugging your eyes out”Two puzzles per page would be more appropriate.

Too much for our chess fan to follow and the printing is not great quality so some of the board diagrams are impossible to see.

Unless you are a MENSA level thinking individual do not buy these books. They will be useless to you.

These puzzles are mostly quite difficult. The format is unusual. Each tactical position is from an actual GM game. The author shows the actual game sequence in bold from the actual game, then gives the best recommended line in non-bold type and is rather difficult to follow. I don't like this format but I need a book with difficult puzzles so I'm working my way through it.

This is a very good exercise book. My rating is 1450 FIDE and by my standards, I feel this is a decent book with a collection of difficult puzzles to crack.Pros1. The Puzzles are not that easy to crack. I have to set it up on a physical board and an average 3 star puzzle takes me around 20 minutes to solve. I have read other puzzle books and I can solve most of them without having to set it up on a board (e.g Woodpecker method puzzle book i can solve without a board). But this one is not like that. You have to genuinely think for a good 10 minutes to figure out the solution.2. The easiest puzzles are the ones which I generally solve within 5 minutes. But this again, is way difficult than Chess.com Puzzle rush or some other puzzle book where easier puzzles are given for lower rated players.3. The Author does not give too many variations and sidelines, which is typical of a puzzle book. He just gives the main line and 2-3 sidelines, thereby saving the reader from a paralysis of analysis.Cons1. The hints given are just below the puzzle and although not direct, sometimes, the hint is enough for you to guess the motif of the puzzle. Sometimes when I am setting up the pieces, I accidentally look at the hint and that spoils the whole exercise. Because now I know what this puzzle is all about (e.g removing the defender, pinning etc).It would have been better to have a Hints section and a solutions section at the end of the book so those who want to check the hint can go to that page to see the hint.

couldnt use it..dont know positions or basics

The book and the ebbok especially are very well developed.You see the diagram and a few words which orient your thoughts without really giving a hint, and the solutions are grouped after every few puzzles so you do not ahve to go to the end of the book, very convenient. The puzzles range from hardo to easy and very entertaining.Good for excercising too. I recommend it fully.
