The ball bearings make them roll smooth. I've put plenty of pressure through them and no bending or breaking. The middle sized unit is probably the most useful. The small one has it's uses but can act like a pizza cutter and easily go through sound deadening mats. The large one has a little too much surface area to get a good crush on the mats.

Each roller is mounted on a bearing, which allows it to spin easily while maintaining a constant center axis. In contrast, without a bearing, the drum would need to be loose on the shaft, leading to potential movement or wobbling. The wooden handles, while well-prepared, feel a bit weak, but I doubt you would need to apply enough force to break them. If you do, then something isn't being done correctly. The small roller uses a rivet, while the larger ones are secured with a nut and bolt.
