Clear Headlights Made Easy This 3M Headlight Restoration Kit turned out to be one of those products that simply does what it promises. My SUV’s headlights had become cloudy and yellowed over time, making night driving less safe and the whole vehicle look older than it is. I was a little skeptical about tackling it myself, but the kit really made it straightforward. The kit includes sanding discs of different grits, a backing pad that attaches to a household drill, and a polishing compound. The instructions were clear enough, and I appreciated that everything I needed was in the box—no last-minute trips to the store. The process does take some patience: sanding in stages, keeping the pad moving to avoid uneven spots, and then finishing with the polish. Once done, the difference was dramatic. My headlights went from a foggy haze to looking nearly brand new. One thing to keep in mind: you’ll need a power drill, and this isn’t a “five-minute fix.” It took me about 30–40 minutes per headlight to get it right. Also, tape off the paint around the headlights before starting—otherwise you risk scuffing it with the sanding discs. After a week of driving in different conditions, including rain, the headlights are still crystal clear. I can see better at night, and the car just looks fresher overall. Bottom line: If your headlights are dull or yellowed, this kit is an inexpensive way to restore them yourself with professional-looking results. Just set aside a little time and use some care, and you’ll be impressed with how clear your headlights can look again.

Before you buy this, don't. Get the 3M 39045, which has the top coat included in the kit! First, the before and after pictures are not an exaggeration. The system will indeed produce a clear lens by following the directions. That part of the process I would give 5 stars to. The directions are very clear, but I would add a few items of my own, having made some mistakes. 1) If possible, remove the covers from the vehicle and secure to a stable work surface!! If not, put a triple layer of masking tape around the edges of the lens to protect everything within 1.5 inches of the cover. (Use the green 3M tape or blue if you have to, NOT the tan kind!!) If you are inexperienced with using a pad mounted in a drill, you will have trouble holding the pad on the surface at first and you'll end up with nicks and edge marks around it. 2) Use very, very light pressure on the first stage. Let the sandpaper do the work. This will help you keep more of the pad in contact while you control the pad's movement. Plus, it will help you avoid digging in the edges of the pad and causing very difficult-to-remove marks or burns. 3) Use a slow speed at first. The instructions give a min/max RPM recommendation, but I found the pad difficult to control when it was spinning that fast, plus it was very easy to cause burn marks. Once I dropped the speed to slow, it became very easy. 4) The first pass is what does all the yellow removal, so take your time, use up all the sanding disks (3 per lens), and wipe the lens often to see where you've missed. If you dig into the lens a little, then concentrate on that spot more. The second pass will not correct deep scratches, so work them out on the first round. 5) The remaining steps are simply to remove the previous step's sanding marks. Use light to medium pressure. Wipe often. 6) With the final tri-zact pad, it takes light pressure. Be careful not to damage this pad, since there's only one in the kit. It had no problem going the distance, but be cautious around the little nibs that stick up from the lens, etc. Keep the pad wet, and also keep the lens wet. The instructions say "damp", but you'll have better results with more moisture (to a point.) Rinse the slurry off and wipe with a terry cloth often. If you have a light handy, shine it at an angle to help see any sanding marks you've missed. 7) With the sanding complete, you'll need to polish. The sponge pad is very absorbent, but a little compound goes a long way. The first time you add compound, use the recommended dime size and work it lightly around and into the pad with your finger (drill turned off.) Then put another dime sized drop on and place the drill on the lens lightly before turning it on. Same as sanding, but now you're using medium to firm pressure for the first 4-5 passes. Cover the lens in repeating passes left/right and up/down until you've been over it 4-6 times (per directions.) Use reduced pressure for the last couple passes. You will probably have to add compound a couple of times, but after that there will be plenty in the pad. I only had to add it once on the second lens. If it slings off or builds up, you've got too much on the pad (just squeeze a little out on a rag.) 8) Finally, use a microfiber cloth to remove the hazy compound. You are NOT done, however, because this kit only cleans off the lens. It does NOTHING to protect the lens! It's going to yellow again within a year if you don't protect it somehow. 3M makes a protectant product, which is included in another kit - 3M 39045, which is an overall better choice than this one (the protectant and green tape are included in that kit.) You can also clear coat it with a clear gloss spray-can finish (as long as it's an exterior grade finish.) You've already got it taped up, so mask off the area and go for it. That will last much longer than the 3M protectant. Don't forget to do an extra prep cleaning before spraying. That's it. My total time was about 1 hour for two lenses on a Toyota Corolla. Overall, I'm satisfied, but I wish I'd known about the more complete kit for just $4 more...

Reviews are not kidding. Best kit I've ever used to restore lights. Headlights look almost new. To try and keep them looking good, I Sprayed with 3m keep clear which advertises 1 year protection, we will see how the spray holds up, but this restoration kit worked extremely well.

Been using this for years and works every time. Cleans up the lens really good if you follow the instructions. Leaves them clear and shiny. Removes all yellowing and any scratches. Easy to use. They use to come with masking tape but didn't this time.

I saw some of the coloring coming off but still did not make the headlights clear. My son bought a 2010 car January and the headlights were horrible. We tried this back when we first bought it and did not work BUT if was freezing so we might of been not doing it long enough, so now in July while it is muggy OK outside at 87. Worked on it for 4 hrs still not clear.

As advertised this 3M headlight restoration sanded kit works great headlights look as clear as brand new now.

This kit truly works wonders if you have headlights that are in need of a restoration of any kind. My headlights weren't so much sun faded as they were riddled with scratches and rock pits. This kit made them look new. I would highly recommend taking the time to clear coat your headlights after using this 3M kit. You can use the UV protection polish they recommend, but it really will not stand the test of time. You will have to continuously apply it and will more than likely have to go through this process again anyway. I will go over my method in this review which should be a more permanent solution for the sun fading problem. My plan is to post the picture in the order I did the job. From before to after. Quick Tips/Advice: I will post plenty of pictures so you can see the process thoroughly. You do not have to be a professional painter to do this. You can choose to remove your headlights or leave them on. I left mine on and had perfectly fine results. Just make sure that you thoroughly mask your car first if you leave your headlights on. Another bit of advice, take your time, don't freak out. I was worried at first too, mostly because just one of my headlights is $500 to replace if I mess up. It will look like you ruined your headlights literally until you finish the last step of the process. So again, don't freak out. I used plain masking tape. It was cheap and works just as well as the 3M tape suggested for use. Save your hands, use the a drill. My headlights have plenty of curves and tight places. Used the drill for the majority of the job. Get the tight spots with by hand. It will save you time as well as your hands. I probably spent about 2 hours per headlight after including my extra clear coat step. My Steps: Follow the 3M instructions all the way until you are finished with the polishing part. This is where I decided to buy some UV protective clear coat. I used the clear coat in the following link but was able to find it at Wal-Mart for $3 and change. Rust-Oleum 249117 Painter's Touch Multi Purpose Spray Paint, 12-Ounce, Clear . Before you clear coat the headlights. Cover your car thoroughly. I used newspapers. If you do not cover your car, odds are that you will get overspray all over you car and you will have to buff it all out. So save yourself the trouble and cover your car up nicely. For results like mine, follow the instructions on the can. Spray 6 coats starting light, but making the coats a little heavier for the last 2 coats. You will probably get a hair, or dust, or other imperfections in the clear coat. DO NOT TRY TO TAKE ANY OF IT OUT WHILE CLEAR IS WET! Relax, leave it be, let it dry, I promise it will be resolved later! I even had some newspaper get blown onto my headlight leaving little creases and annoying pits. Just keep adding clear coat until you are done with all 6 coats. This is the hard part. WAIT. Wait for the clear coat to fully cure before moving on. If you don't, it will get messed up and you will have way more work to do than you need to. I waited 5 days with 50-60 degree weather. You can sill driver your car, the clear dries to the touch in 20 minutes, and to handle in an hour. So you can drive your car for the next 5 days. Now that you have waited, you can finish up! I literally repeated the last two steps on the now cured clear coat to finish up. Literally wet sand it with the 3000 grit pad, and polish it up. I would take the time to clean and dry the headlight off periodically during the wet sanding process to see what looks done and what still needs work. This can include dust, orange peel, pits, cracks, runs, etc (I had a little bit of everything). Since you put 6 coats on, you should have a decent amount of room for this process. Still, be careful as to not sand too deep or you will have to start over.

So far so good. My car is 16 years old and this is the first time the lenses have been treated. My lenses have vastly improved, hopefully it lasts a reasonable time before having to reapply. It will take some effort from start to finish, but if you follow the instructions diligently, you’ll be well rewarded.

I was a bit sceptical at first and was worried that 1 set would not be enough as I have large headlights! I went for it and oh my word it worked out perfectly fine. Both headlights look almost like new. They were faded and yellow before! All I can say to others that want to do this is have patience and take your time, read the instructions and then read them again, probably watch the YouTube clip as well, you will be happy with the results

The instructions are very clear and the product works very well. There is a learning curve and it will only be as good as the effort you are willing to put in. It is a little time consuming but it makes a huge difference. This is the first time in 7 years that I have restored the headlights and it made a big difference in clarity. The picture has the left headlight not done and the right one finished and you can tell the difference easily. I just kept my drill on speed 1 and controlling the sanding was really easy. When using the 3000grit pad use a lot of water and it does a great job making it almost clear, then the compound finished it up to almost like new. I am very pleased with this kit. I do wish it came with a sealing wax for when you finish but that’s not a big deal.
