They are one position. They are tall enough to rest your head a little and with a small pillow it is even more comfortable. These chairs are so nice. You can sit strait, lean back or sit forward in them on your own, and the position of the chair is a slight recline for observing and enjoying wherever you are. So portable and stable I store one in my car to always have and take them to any outing too.
