You can turn the pedal crank while the bike is in the stand to look at the chain from different positions, work on the shifter, etc.

What is the size of the box when shipping?

Rectangular 6inches by 6 inches square 5 feet long...not very heavy. Great rack!

What is the small thin rod with the plastic loops on each end for? Doesn't seem like it fits securely against the vertical rod.

It is a stability rod to prevent the front wheel from moving side to side. Each end has multiple holes to adapt around. Works great.
